Clarksville, TN – With a native speaker base of over 400 million people, it stands to reason that Spanish features a wide range of different cultural identities among the many countries that speak the global language.
The Spanish program at Austin Peay State University gives its students the skills to be fluent speakers and the tools to be global citizens, but for one day each year, the University invites area high school students to campus for a chance to experience the diversity of a language spoken in 21 countries across the world.
Browders endow scholarship at APSU to promote European studies
December 14, 2015
Clarksville, TN – Dr. Dewey Browder, retired chair of the Austin Peay State University Department of History and Philosophy, is interested in all things European. He is particularly fond of German foods, and among the delicacies he favors are Schnecken, which are more commonly known here by the French name “escargots.”
In his living room, which is crowded with books on European history, dozens of German nutcrackers stand on the mantle to commemorate the holiday season.
Clarksville Beginnings – Part 2: Revisiting the Massacre at Sevier Station; In Their Own Words
October 27, 2014
Clarksville, TN – I love history and find it fascinating – and you must enjoy it as well or you would not be reading this article! Yet, I could listen and listen to someone who is alive and well with me today go on ad nauseum about the dry facts from the past and get absolutely nothing from it.
But, to hear the very words of those who lived before us – those priceless journals, letters, and testimonies – that is gold to me! It is amazing to be able to peak into their minds and hearts for just a moment and experience with them the joys, the struggles, the hopes, and the pain of the experience of life.
That is what we have with the story of the lives of Valentine Sevier, his family, and community – their own words.
New APSU Spanish class tackles vampires and zombies
April 3, 2014
Clarksville, TN – The last few years have been rough for Spain. The unemployment rate is close to 30 percent, which has led to daily protests and civil unrest in that European nation. For some scholars, this turmoil helps explain the sudden popularity of vampire and zombie literature in that country.
“Spain is in shambles,” Dr. Osvaldo Di Paolo, Austin Peay State University associate professor of Spanish, said. “From 2008, the world crisis has hit them hard. When you read a novel from Spain about a zombie apocalypse, it makes you feel like this is happening. You feel the same destruction of society in every aspect.”

APSU offering 2014 study abroad trip to Galapagos Islands
October 19, 2013
Clarksville, TN – On an overcast afternoon in August, Dr. Osvaldo Di Paolo, Austin Peay State University associate professor of Spanish, stood on a beach in the Galapagos Islands and watched ocean waves crash against black, volcanic rocks. A few feet away, a marine iguana prepared to go for a swim.
The creature was a bit larger than the lizards Di Paolo might find at home in Clarksville, but it was nothing compared to the giant, 800-pound tortoises he saw earlier that day.

Austin Peay State University
Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University student Jorge Jiménez Cano first arrived in the United States, he only spoke a handful of basic English words, such as “hello” and “yes.” This proved to be a bit problematic on the days when he wasn’t feeling well.
“When I’d go to the doctor, I’d say ‘ouch here,’” he recalled, pointing to his throat to show the doctor where he felt pain. “It was intimidating.” [Read more]
