Clarksville Parks and Recreation Wins Award for its First-ever Kids Triathlon

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department received a Four Star Award at the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) at this year’s state convention held in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Founded in 1952, the TRPA is a professional society of more than 1,200 individual and agency members interested in the recreation and parks movement in Tennessee. The TRPA is involved in lobbying, education and scholarships related to the field of parks and recreation. [Read more]

New documentary at APSU explores Sioux Indian buried a century ago in Germany

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On a snowy afternoon a few years ago, the filmmaker Bettina Renner was walking through an old, Catholic cemetery in Dresden, Germany, when she came across a headstone with the name “Edward Two Two” engraved on it. The marker further identified the man, who died in 1914, as a Sioux Indian chief.

The grave seemed so out of place in Dresden – a city nearly destroyed by massive Allied bombings during World War II – that Renner set out to learn how Edward Two Two wound up Germany. [Read more]

Lone Oak Picnic provides great food and entertainment to the Cunningham Community

The Civitan ClubCunningham, TN – On Saturday, July 27th, the Central Civitan Club held the 105th Annual Lone Oak Picnic from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Central Civitan Building located on Alonzo Place in Southern Montgomery County. By 11:00am, the parking area was overflowing with cars and trucks of those in attendance.

“This morning it was threatening rain, but the sun came out and we have a beautiful day for the event,” stated Central Civitan officer Larry Pitts.

“Here’s to Heroes” Fundraiser at Tilted Kilt in Clarksville

Tilted KiltClarksville, TN – Budweiser and Tilted Kilt kicked off their 3rd annual fundraising program, “Here’s to Heroes” on May 27th. The fundraiser is designed to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation which seeks to provide educational scholarships to family members and dependents of fallen or injured soldiers.

For a six week period, customers are given an opportunity to purchase a $1.00 or $5.00 paper dog tag to be personally customized and displayed on the pub walls.

Clarksville Kiwanis Club Rodeo continues tonight

Kiwanis Club of Clarksville RodeoClarksville, TN – The Downtown Kiwanis Club is currently hosting its 26th annual Kiwanis Rodeo and the festivities continue tonight at the Montgomery County 4-H Arena located at 1924 Rossview Road. The Rodeo opened last night to a sell out crowd. Tonight the gates open at 6:00pm and the Rodeo starts at 8:00pm. The Kiwanis Rodeo has been sanctioned by the PRCA and WPRA.

Events include calf roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, and bull riding and more. There are also various contests, games, and a kids zone with inflatables.

APSU receives 8-figure gift in memory of former educator

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – There was a noticeable energy around the Austin Peay State University campus on Tuesday. APSU President Tim Hall planned to announce a “transforming gift” that afternoon, prompting faculty, staff, students and the community at large to keep asking, “What is it?”

Their curiosity was apparently overwhelming because a crowd of people packed into the Morgan University Center ballroom, requiring APSU officials to set out more chairs. Finally, after some brief introductions, Hall stepped behind the podium.

Reagan Giving Circle at APSU to have award luncheon

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Reagan Giving Circle at Austin Peay State University will award more than $8,500 in scholarships to 10 APSU female students during its award ceremony next month.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30am, Monday, April 29th in the Clarksville Country Club, located at 334 Fairway Drive, Clarksville. Tickets are $25.00 per person.

APSU to host 61st annual Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Later this month, more than 100 middle and high school students throughout middle Tennessee will converge on the Austin Peay State University campus to participate in the 61st annual Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair (MTSEF).

The MTSEF, affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), starts March 21st, and the public is invited to view all MTSEF projects between 10:00am–8:00pm, March 22nd in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. [Read more]

National Science Foundation-funded program at APSU awards 16 scholarships for students to study STEM disciplines

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A new National Science Foundation-funded program at Austin Peay State University recently awarded 16 scholarships to community college transfer students, active duty military personnel, veterans and dependents interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines for the 2012-13 academic year.

The project, titled “Increasing the Number of Regional Community College Graduates and Active Duty Military Personnel, Veterans and Dependents Enrolling in and Completing a STEM Baccalaureate Degree,” awarded scholarships to nine APSU students and one Volunteer State Community College student thanks to the more than $500,000 the NSF is providing APSU over the next five years.
