Clarksville-Montgomery County to Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Town’s Surrender to Union Naval Forces

Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War - CW150 CommissionMontgomery County, TN – The Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War Sesquicentennial or CW150 Commission is preparing for the 150th anniversary of the “Surrender of Clarksville.”

To commemorate this historic event, the CW150 Commission will host a ceremony marking the date on Sunday, February 19th, 2012 at 2:00pm at Fort Defiance Civil War Park.

Friends of Fort DefianceClarksville, TN – The Friends of Fort Defiance would like to invite you to a Civil War Ball in support of the Fort Defiance Interpretive and Visitors Center, a beautiful facility located on the site of Fort Defiance’s earth works in Clarksville. It recently was opened in April of 2011. If you have not had the opportunity to visit there as yet, we encourage you to do so. It is truly an impressive facility.

The Civil War Ball will be held on January 14th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.

A Sleepy Hollow Bonfire and Night Hike at Dunbar Cave

Clarksville, TN – On friday, October 28th, the Friends of Dunbar Cave and the Clarksville Children’s Theater are sponsoring ” A Sleepy Hollow Bonfire and Night Hike.” The event is from 6:00pm-9:00pm.

Come join Ichabod Crane, as he guides you on a night hike while regaling your family with the Legend of Stingy Jack. Once at the mouth of Dunbar Cave, the Clarkville Children’s Theater will dramatize the Legend of the Headless Horsemman. Please bring flashlights for your family. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a family event, and not intended to be scary. [Read more]

Another Successful Cooling at the Cave

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday July 30th, the mouth of Dunbar Cave was a buzz with activity. It was time for the annual Cooling at the Cave event, sponsored by the Friends of Dunbar Cave. As the afternoon temperatures soared, the local flocked to cool down in the constant cool breeze blowing from the mouth of the cave.

The quartet, Red River Breeze, provided the entertainment of traditional Celtic music, while children danced and the adults clapped. The Friends of Dunbar Cave provided ice cold lemonade, water, cookies, granola bars, and freezer pops. Many played a variety of board games, tapping their toes to an Irish jig. Back in the days before air conditioning, this is how locals cooled off and fellowshipped with others.

“Cooling at the Cave” is this afternoon

Clarksville, TN – Dunbar Cave’s annual “Cooling at the Cave” event is this afternoon. The Friends of Dunbar Cave present music, games and refreshments at the cool cave entrance. Refreshments for a donation, t-shirts and postcards available to purchase.

Everything starts at 3:00pm and continues until 5:00pm. Red River Breeze will be at the cave entrance playing celtic music.

So come out and enjoy natural air conditioning and show your support for Dunbar Cave.

Clarksville, TN – The weather is getting hotter, and the Friends of Dunbar Cave are gearing up to cool down!

Locals have always come to the mouth of Dunbar Cave in the dog days of summer to beat the heat. With a year round breeze of 56 degree blowing from the cave, the Friends of Dunbar Cave invite your family to enjoy Mother Nature’s air conditioning on July 30th 3:00pm-5:00pm. For those who need assistance, or just want a ride, a golf cart donated by the City of Clarksville Golf Pro Jeff Vaughn will be running from the parking lot to the cave entrance, and back.

The Fort Defiance Interperative Center Ribbon Cutting

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville held an invitation only grand opening for the newly redesigned Fort Defiance site on Thursday. The public opening is scheduled for this morning with a gala event that aims to bring the history of the fort to life. Fort Defiance never fired a shot in anger, however the Fort and the city it guards looms large in the history of the Civil War era.
