Lecture Series at APSU to feature research work from Music Professor

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In the late 1880s, at the age of 8, Clarence Cameron White began studying violin. The Clarksville native then became a musical prodigy in his own right within four years, studying with accomplished violinist Will Marion Cook and attending Oberlin Conservatory at the age of 16.

The nature of White’s compositions changed over time. An Austin Peay State University music professor will share her research on White’s musical repertoire as the next presenter in the University’s esteemed Provost Lecture Series.

Dr. Gail Robinson-Oturu, professor of voice, will present “Clarence Cameron White: Clarksville’s Connection to Haitian Opera and Carnegie Hall” at 3:00pm, Thursday, January 20th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. [Read more]

Provost Lecture Series at APSU to explore the field of dance

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University will explore the field of dance as both a scholarly pursuit and creative activity.

Marcus Hayes, assistant professor of dance, will present “Dance in Higher Education: The Intersection of Scholarly Inquiry and Creative Activity” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, November 18th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

In 2007, Hayes joined the department as assistant professor in dance and theater. In May 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in dance and history from Beloit (WI) College and, in May 2005, an M.F.A. with a concentration in dance choreography from Mills College, Oakland, CA. Provost Lecture Series at APSU features recent research from education professors

Dr. Benita Bruster and Dr. Barbara Peterson, both assistant professors of education, will present “Examining Focus Group Reflections Using Qualitative Data Analysis” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, October 21st in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. [Read more]

Provost Lecture Series at APSU continues with talk about Cotton Mather’s ‘American Bible’

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University will feature a presentation next week about the writings of a 17th century Puritan minister who left behind his thoughts, opinions and interpretations of the Bible.

Dr. Clark Maddux, assistant professor of languages and literature, will present “Cotton Mather’s American Bible” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, October 7th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

Before joining APSU, Maddux was assistant professor and coordinator of English graduate studies at Tennessee State University in Nashville. He has authored a number of journal articles, including “God’s Responsibility: Narrative Choice and Providential History in Mather’s ‘Biblia Americana’ Commentary on Ezra,” published in 2007 in Early American Literature.
