APSU sponsors four Americorps Vista placements in Clarksville for 2014-15 academic year

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Through a partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, Austin Peay State University’s Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement (CSLCE) has placed three Americorps Vista personnel within Clarksville community agencies for the 2014-2015 academic year, with a fourth to be placed in February 2015.

As part of the Community Strong program, which aims to strengthen community resources in Montgomery County, Vista volunteers are placed in local agencies that impact the quality of life for veterans and those struggling with hunger and homelessness. [Read more]

Clarksville Civil War RoundtableClarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, May 21st, 2014 at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Medical Center. This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall.

The meeting begins at 7:00 pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.

APSU choral activities gain International Reputation

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In early February, Dr. Korre Foster, director of choral activities at Austin Peay State University, turned on his computer to watch a live broadcast of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMC).

The acclaimed, 100-year-old choir is one of the largest and most respected choral organizations in Canada, but that evening, Foster was more interested in watching one of the guest conductors – APSU graduate student Zach Thompson.

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In the early 1790s, about 13,000 federal soldiers marched into rural western Pennsylvania to put down a small uprising. The farmers in the area had turned violent, destroying each other’s property, attacking and kidnapping law enforcement officers and formulating plans for an assault on nearby Pittsburgh.

Then-President George Washington was not pleased, so he sent in the troops.

Planters Bank to Showcase ‘Second Bloom’ Exhibit from Jennifer Reverri

Planters BankClarksville, TN – The Planters Bank-Hilldale First Thursday” Art Exhibit will showcase the floral photography of Jennifer Reverri during May, with blooms from Italy, New Orleans and Nashville.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Reverri was whisked her away from teaching middle school math to a life of travel when she became a military spouse. A tour in Italy reignited a love of ceramics and paved a path toward photography.
