Austin Peay State University to host regional Tennessee History Day Competition on February 22nd

Clarksville, TN – On February 22nd, about 300 of the top middle and high school history students in the area will converge on Austin Peay State University for a Tennessee History Day Competition. The local campus was recently selected as the host site for the newly-formed North Middle Tennessee district of the highly-regarded national competition.
Students from surrounding counties will visit APSU that Wednesday to participate in a wide range of categories, including performance, websites, posters, papers and documentary film, all centered around this year’s theme of Revolution, Reaction and Reform. The winners in each category will go on to the state competition in Nashville in April. Students who place in that event will go on to the National History Day Competition in College Park, MD. History honor society represents Austin Peay State University well at National Conference

Clarksville, TN – Deanna Carter, an Austin Peay State University history graduate student, felt a little like a celebrity. Whenever she walked through the lobby of the Hilton at Orlando’s Walt Disney World resort, people would stop their conversations and glance over at it.
Their attention was likely focused on her gray blazer, which had the words “Austin Peay State University Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society” stitched across the front.
“There were people from as far as California there and from some very prestigious schools, such as Carnegie Melon University, and they all knew us,” Carter said.

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University have been recognized for their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Sherry Kendrick, technical clerk in the Office of the Registrar, received the PeayFormance Customer Service Award. The Enrollment Management and Academic Support will present the award quarterly to a professional or clerical staff member nominated by his or her peers as exemplifying service above and beyond the call of duty to APSU students, faculty and the general campus community. APSU History Honor Society celebrates 50th anniversary

Clarksville, TN – In May of 1961, a group of young Austin Peay State University students, believing that they were living at the end of history, chartered a new campus honor society focused on studying the past.
“We thought we had missed all the great things,” Riley Darnell (’62), former Tennessee secretary of state and founding member of the club, said. “There would be no more wars.”

APSU History Honor Society Wins Best Chapter in Nation for Third Year in a Row

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Minoa Uffelman, associate professor of history at Austin Peay State University, kept checking her email earlier this week, hoping to hear something from the National Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) History Honor Society.
She knew that every year, around this time, the national organization announced the winners of the “Best Chapter” awards, and she was hoping APSU’s Theta Delta Chapter would take home the honor for an unprecedented third year in a row.
But by Tuesday morning, her email inbox was empty, and she began to get worried.

APSU History Honor Students Create New Scholarly Journal

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Montgomery didn’t get much sleep this past semester. Aside from the normal stresses of a graduating college senior, the Austin Peay State University history student was plagued with images of misspelled words and incorrectly used commas during many sleepless nights. When she thought about scholarly citations and the proper use of the Chicago Manual of Style, she nearly went into a panic.
That’s because Montgomery, a member of the University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society, took on an enormous responsibility during her final semester at APSU. She was appointed to serve as the editor-in-chief of the first scholarly history journal in Austin Peay’s history.

APSU Phi Alpha Theta Students Do Well at Regional History Conference

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Minoa Uffelman, assistant professor of history at Austin Peay State University, tried not to smile last week when asked if her students would put on a strong showing at the annual Phi Alpha Theta History Conference at Murray State University that weekend.
“Hopefully we’ll win something,” she said.
That was her way of being humble. The University’s PAT chapter, which Uffelman advises, was twice named as the “Best Chapter” in the country. The organization attracts some of the campus’ brightest history students, so it came as no surprise last weekend when two of its members took home the conference’s top awards.

Maryville College Students Visit APSU to Learn About the Civil War

Clarksville, TN – On a cold afternoon earlier this month, a van drove through the melting snow in Clarksville and stopped at Austin Peay State University. A group of Maryville College students, bundled in jackets, quickly got out and went into the Morgan University Center. They’d spent much of the morning outside at Fort Donelson, and they were looking forward to a few hours in the warm indoors, learning about one of this city’s famous historical figures – Nannie Haskins Williams.
“Nannie is an important figure because she started keeping a diary when she was 16 years old in Clarksville, a year after Fort Donelson fell,” Dr. Minoa Uffelman, associate professor of history at APSU, said. “She kept it through the Civil War and after.” [Read more]
APSU History Club Named Best Chapter of the Year for a Second Time

Shortly after APSU’s Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society won “Best Chapter” in the nation last year, the University hosted an unrelated celebration marking its record enrollment of 10,188 students. For the history professors and students standing in the Morgan University Center Plaza that day, the event was bittersweet.
“I knew it was good for the University, but I knew it would be harder for us to win best chapter again,” Dr. Minoa Uffelman, assistant professor of history and club adviser, said.
The National PAT is split into different divisions, representing different sized schools. Last year, APSU won “Best Chapter of 2009” for Division III, which accounted for schools with 10,000 students or less. The new enrollment numbers put the chapter in a different division against larger universities. [Read more]
