APSU Homeschool Music Program presents new offerings in 2016

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Since 2013, the Austin Peay State University Homeschool Music Program has offered general music courses for home-schooled students in Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

Beginning with the 2016-17 academic year, Austin Peay has announced the launch of several additional opportunities targeted at early childhood, upper elementary and middle school students.

Dunbar Cave’s Hummingbird and Butterfly Festival Fun for All

August 22, 2016

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – Dunbar Cave State Park at 401 Old Dunbar Cave Road held its Hummingbird and Butterfly Festival on Saturday with numerous events for the family.

From 9:00am to 11:00am and again from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, hummingbirds were banded by Cyndi Routledge, a master bander who has completed the five-year course taught by the Department of the Interior.

Information gathered at the banding is sent to Laurel, Maryland where a huge data base on hummingbirds is located under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey.

Clarskville's Roxy Regional TheatreClarksville, TN – The Roxy Regional Theatre is gearing up to celebrate 34 years of presenting live theatre in the heart of Historic Downtown Clarksville on the corner of Franklin and First. The Roxy has long been regarded as “the cornerstone of downtown re-development,” and SEASON 34 will see new productions and exciting changes to the programming and structure of the theatre.

Ryan Bowie, longtime company member and former Director of Fundraising and Development, will take the reins as the organization’s new Executive Director.

Austin Peay State University College of Education prepares local teachers for 2017 solar eclipse

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – More than 4,000 years ago, Chung K’ang, the fourth emperor of the Hea dynasty in China, reportedly executed two astronomers named Hi and Ho because they didn’t predict a solar eclipse.

“So (an eclipse) is a very important thing; it can be life-threatening,” Dr. Rex Gandy, Austin Peay State University provost and vice president of academic affairs, joked recently. “And it’s pretty amazing. The sun is 90 million miles away, and it’s huge, so what are the odds that there is this little rock a quarter million miles away that just blots out the sun almost perfectly.”

YMCA Race Series kicks off 2016 season With The Gauntlet presented by CDE Lightband

Clarksville's YMCAClarksville, TN – Get on your mark, Middle Tennessee: the YMCA Race Series kicks off its 2016 season with the 3rd Annual Gauntlet presented this year by CDE Lightband on Saturday, May 21st.

For its second year, the race is again set to take teams of two on three miles of trails through Rotary Park, with 11 fun and challenging partner obstacles in your route.

John Ward, the vicar of Holy Trinity Church, believed the playwright became sick following a drinking binge with friends. The author C. Martin Mitchell hypothesized that a cerebral hemorrhage took the life of the English language’s greatest writer.

The Internet is full of theories, ranging from syphilis to cocaine abuse, on the death of William Shakespeare, but if you’re simply interested in facts, all we know is that the 52-year-old bard died in 1616, making this year the 400th anniversary of his death.

The Sunday afternoon concert spotlights award-winning composer Jeffrey Wood’s world premiere of Different Bodies.

The performance opens with Rossini’s charming Il signor Bruschino Overture, taking the audience through a full spectrum of contrasting musical fables and emotional tales, concluding with Maurice Ravel’s popular Mother Goose, a magical work that tells the story of Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales.

Brad Barrett Named F&M Bank Director
