New art exhibit at APSU offers powerful look at slave trade

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Trahern Gallery, with support from the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the APSU Department of Art and Design, is pleased to open its 2015-2016 exhibition season with artist Stephen Hayes and his powerful body of work titled “Cash Crop.”
“Cash Crop” is an exhibition that invites viewers to walk into an emotional, physical and psychic space to confront the past, present and future.

Clarksville, TN – Inviting museum-goers to use their ears as much as their eyes is quickly gaining traction in the art community. Much like using color on a physical canvas, sound artists use the noises that exist around us to fill space and grab the attention of the listener in a way no different than a sculpture, painting or mosaic.
Students at Austin Peay State University, as well as the community at large, will have an opportunity to explore this branch of contemporary art when the APSU Department of Art presents “SOUND”, an exhibition of sound art held at the APSU Trahern Gallery from January 20th-February 6th.

Clarksville, TN – For the last 12 years, Gregory Botts has been criss-crossing the nation with a car loaded full of art supplies, painting the sites and varying light he encountered.
At first begun as a clarification of the larger abstract works that he was making in the studio, these paintings have grown into their own body of impressive works that feed and inform his larger body of work. Austin Peay State University’s Trahern Gallery is proud to host the first large survey of these works in connection with his larger studio paintings this winter, “Gregory Botts: Painting Along the Road.”

Exhibition at APSU showcases rare WWI photographs

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Department of Art and the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts are excited to present an exhibition of rare German photographs this fall to mark the centennial of the start of World War 1.
German soldier Fritz Einstein took the photographs on three separate fronts during the war. The photos were discovered and extensively restored by Einstein’s son and Nashville resident Frank Einstein.
APSU Art Department hosts “Faculty Biennial” exhibit in Trahern Gallery

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University art professors are often commended for inspiring students in their classrooms, but that type of praise can occasionally overshadow their skills as gifted, professional artists.
On August 25th, a new exhibit, “The Faculty Biennial,” in APSU’s Trahern Gallery will remind the community that high-caliber artists continue to work at the University.
APSU Folk Art Collection gets donation from Karen Parr-Moody

Clarksville, TN – While visiting Austin, Texas, in 2013, Karen Parr-Moody came across a painting by the renowned folk artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth. The dusty image was of a girl in a swimsuit, and it evoked strong childhood memories for Parr-Moody.
“I really identified with going to my grandfather’s fishing camp every weekend on the Tennessee River,” she said. “It’s rustic and beautiful down there. The ‘Bikini Girl’ just reminded me of growing up and being a little girl.”
