Clarksville, TN – In the early 1980s, the artist Pietro Maddalena converted a 15th century farmhouse, situated atop a hill in Tuscany, into a studio where he intended to teach students the ceramic arts.
That historic building, with its commanding views of the hills and farmlands, grew into one of the most important private ceramic schools in Italy – La Meridiana International School of Ceramic Art. This May, a group of Austin Peay State University students will travel to La Meridiana as part of the newest study abroad program offered by APSU. [Read more]
APSU Artist Shipley Displays Work at Nashville Airport
January 28, 2011
Clarksville, TN – Every day, hundreds of people from across the country arrive at the Nashville International Airport, and, shortly after getting off the plane, among the first things they see in Tennessee are the innovative and highly-stylized ceramic sculptures by artist Ken Shipley.
That’s because Shipley, an Austin Peay State University associate professor of art, is among only a handful of artists from across the state to have his work exhibited at the airport as part of the “Flying Solo Series: Winter 2011.” The exhibit is part of Arts at the Airport, which is funded by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority and the Tennessee Arts Commission. Ceramic Artist Rose Visits APSU for Artist Lecture Series on October 12th
October 9, 2010
Clarksville, TN – The bird, perched on the rim of a cup, was smooth, and in the right light, gave off a greenish sheen. It was beautiful, but it looked unlike any bird in existence.
That’s because the animal, in spite of all its elaborate detail, was not real. It was a work of art. The great ceramicist Peter Rose used thrown and press molded pieces of clay to create the ornate bird. At 7:00pm on October 12th, he’ll visit Austin Peay State University’s Trahern Building to give a talk about his craft as part of the APSU Artist Lecture Series. The series, sponsored by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, brings renowned artists to campus to discuss their work with students and the community. [Read more]
