Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Late that night, while Austin Peay State University (APSU) freshman Madison Morgan finished her laundry, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the European Union was closing its borders.

Beginning the next day at noon, no one would be able to fly out of France’s Charles De Gaulle Airport. Morgan watched Macron on her smartphone.

APSU Woodward Library to host month-long exhibit, lecture and film series on World War I

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In February 1918, the U.S. Army 32nd Infantry Division, known as the “Red Arrow” because of the insignia worn on their shoulder sleeves, arrived in France to join in the fight on the Western Front, the main theatre of war during World War I.

Made primarily of Army National Guard units from Wisconsin and Michigan, the Red Arrow lived up to its name by successfully piercing enemy lines where other units failed.

World War I exhibit will be on display at the APSU Woodward Library October 20th – November 20th.

Famed French scholar and medieval literature expert to visit APSU April 4th

Looking upon their paintings or writings today, it may seem that these individuals were simply depicting religious scenes from the Bible, but the scenes they picked were meant to influence society’s views on governance.

APSU a hosting site for Spring 2015 International Francophone Film Festival

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Throughout the months of February and March, Austin Peay State University will be hosting the Spring 2015 International Francophone Film Festival. A part of the 2015 Tournées Film Festival, six internationally acclaimed French films will be screened on campus, beginning February 25th.

The Tournées Festival is a program of FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which aims to bring contemporary French cinema to American college and university campuses. [Read more]

APSU Students Meet Prime Minister of Quebec During Study Abroad Trip

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Late one evening, a hotel clerk slid a slip of paper under Dr. Karen Sorenson’s door. The Austin Peay State University professor of French was staying at the Hotel Clarendon in Quebec City, and the next afternoon she was going to embark on an intense study abroad program with a group of APSU students. For the next five weeks, the students would only be allowed to speak French.

To have a bit of fun before they left, Sorenson arranged for a morning of sightseeing through the historic, 400-year-old city. But shortly after waking up, she noticed the note under her door.

Noted Native American Scholar and Filmmaker to Speak at APSU Asanbe Symposium

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s annual Asanbe Diversity Symposium, slated for next month, will feature Native American educator, writer, filmmaker and producer Dr. Patty Loew.

At 1:00pm on Friday, April 1st, Loew will lecture in the Honors Commons on “Creation to Contemporary Conflict: Native American Origin Stories as Predictors of Modern Environmental Struggles.” At 3:00pm in the same room, there will be a showing of her documentary film, “Way of the Warrior,” followed by a 4:00pm discussion of the film. APSU’s 2010 Distinguished Professor Award recipient to address degree candidates at graduation

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will send off 631 candidates for degrees during dual Winter Commencement ceremonies December 17th in the Dunn Center.

Dr. Karen Sorenson, professor of French and the 2010 APSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award recipient, will be the keynote speaker at both commencement events.

The faculty member who earns the Distinguished Professor Award in May serves as commencement speaker at APSU’s winter graduation.
