Comedy on the Cumberland provides post-flood assistance to local branch of the American Red Cross

Comedy on the CumberlandThe Second Comedy on the Cumberland benefit has come and gone. The charity event held on Tuesday evening brought five very funny comedian to Clarksville; raising over $4,000 to help the local chapter of the American Red Cross start on their own road to recovery after the Great Flood of 2010.

Interim CEO Randy Weddle related how they were affected by the flooding. “The flood of 2010 affected your Red Cross just as it did so many citizens of the county and surrounding areas. We had about three feet of water that came through our building, but you would never know it by the way that our strong hearted volunteers responded to the needs of our citizen”. The Red Cross spent a lot of money and expended a lot of their resources, helping local residents during the May 2010 flooding.

Mayor Piper to present Mayor’s Certificate to Jose Ortiz

Mayor John E. Piper presented a Mayor’s Certificate to Fort Campbell soldier Specialist Jose Ortiz, with the 63rd Chemical Company, for his life-saving actions on June 18th, 2010 down at the boat ramp of McGregor Park.

City officially opens the newest section of the Riverwalk

In a formal ribbon cutting ceremony the City of Clarksville unveiled the new North Riverwalk Extension on Wednesday. Clarksville Mayor Johnny Piper listed the features to the attendees at the ribbon cutting ceremony which consists of a 12’ sidewalk lined with park benches, picnic tables, and lighting along the Cumberland River from Pilot’s Plaza (behind O’Charleys) to the mouth of the Red River.

The 2010 Unity Day Ceremony

The 2010 Unity Day Ceremony held in Clarksville, Tennessee on Sunday June 6th. The event is the brainchild of Treva Gordon, the Founder and Publisher of the Convenient Shopper an advertising supported bi-monthly magazine. However, during the evenings ceremonies Clarksville Mayor Johnny Piper announced that Unity Day would be officially recognized by the City each year.

Unity is the quality or state of being made one.

That is exactly what happened during the first annual Unity Day Celebration on Saturday night. For at least one evening, our community was made whole. The purpose of Unity Day was to help unite the Clarksville community, it celebrated the accomplishments our community’s leadership, and paid tribute to and recognized the hard work of non-profit organizations in Clarksville, TN; and It more than succeeded in reaching this lofty goal.

The Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization is hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:00 am, May 31st, at Veterans Memorial Park, Clarksville.

Retired Air Force Maj. Bill Summers, Ward 10 Clarksville city councilman, will be guest speaker.

In a gala event at the Roxy Regional Theatre local Radio Station owner and Comedian Hank Bonecutter’s dream of using his love of comedy to enact community change came true. The first Comedy on the Cumberland raised approximately $6,000 of which the proceeds went to benefit Project F.U.E.L.

Project F.U.E.L. feeds hungry children in the Clarksville/Montgomery County school system. “Over twelve hundred school children leave school on Friday, and don’t have a solid meal again until they return to school on Monday”, said Bonecutter, “This is embarrassing and unacceptable”. The life’s mission of Denise Skidmore, who was led to this effort by her Christian faith. “I was searching for a purpose in my life, wondering what would be my footprint if I were to die today” she said, “I want to feed every child I can. I won’t stop until they are all taken care of”.

The success of this show has already created quite a buzz among Nashville comedians. With comedians contacting Bonecutter to see how they can get to Clarksville to be part of future Comedy on the Cumberland shows.

John McDonald and Tom Thayer from the Roxy Regional Theatre graciously provided the use of their luxurious theatre as the venue for this charity benefit.

F&M bank and Wendy’s of Clarksville provided the financial backing for the event, with Clarksville Online, Discover Clarksville, Ad One, Clarksville’s Best Buys along with CDE Lightband providing promotion for the event. “All of our partners jumped on this opportunity to help Project F.U.E.L without hesitation”, said Bonecutter, “We couldn’t have done it without them”. Clarksville-Montgomery County leadership look ahead to Civil War Sesquicentennial

It was just 150 years ago that our nation was torn apart by the Civil War. Brother faced off against brother in often brutal battles. Even after the Union’s victory and the eventual reunification of the southern states lingering tensions remained for many years.

It is said time heals all wounds and indeed and we are looking at the approaching sesquicentennial of the Civil War in 2011 with a air of celebration,recognizing of the history of America in a way that everyone can embrace.

We are fortunate to be in an area with a rich Civil War heritage including Fort Defiance (Fort Bruce), nearby Fort Donelson, and other Civil War sites. City and County leaders hope to be ready to attract tourists who will be the traveling the country visiting civil war era sites as a part of the Civil War Sesquicentennial.

Marina construction has begun

top-spot-logo-200x68[1]It started as an idea back in 1978. Now roughly 30 years later, the construction of the Clarksville Marina is underway. The ground breaking ceremony was held at the Fairgrounds Park yesterday, to a standing room only crowd.

Jim Durrett introduced Mayor Johnny Piper to a round of applause . Mayor Piper thanked all of the individuals who served on committees over the years that worked on the project, and helped bring it to a reality. Mayor Piper stated, “It is a testament to those that are in this city who commit to a project knowing that it’s the best for the city and that it needs to be done and that they stayed focused to be able to get it done.”
