APSU literature class explores the illuminating history of zombies in popular culture

Clarksville, TN – This fall, Dr. Marisa Sikes, Austin Peay State University (APSU) assistant professor of languages and literature, is looking at cultural significance of the undead in her class “Zombies in Popular Film and Literature.”
The course examines the origins of these fictional creatures in the form of the early 20th Century Haitian zonbi on to the Americanized zombie, which has its roots in contagion-based apocalypse fiction.

Austin Peay State University Women’s and Gender Studies program presents “The Vagina Monologues” March 27th and 28th

Clarksville, TN – This month, the Austin Peay State University Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and V-Day are celebrating 11 years of producing Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues.”

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, TN participates in World Habitat Day 2011

Clarksville, TN – In recognition of World Habitat Day 2011, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, TN is planning to participate in the Habitat ReStore ‘ReCreate’ fall festival to address the need for decent housing around the world, including in Clarksville and Montgomery County.
The theme of World Habitat Day 2011 is “Housing cities after a disaster,” a serious and growing problem around the world. From Haiti and Japan to New Orleans and Memphis, urban areas face different and great challenges when responding to disasters. These dangers and challenges require effective and creative policies from governments and humanitarian groups around the world. [Read more]
APSU professor to discuss project with farmers in Haiti

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University professor will discuss a project he began in Haiti last summer with funding from the University.
Dr. Matthew Kenney, interim director of APSU’s President’s Emerging Leaders Program and associate professor of political science, will present discuss “A New Mocha Model: Coffee and Cocoa as a Path to Development in Haiti” from 3:00pm-4:00pm, Thursday, September 23rd in the Honors Commons building (formerly Memorial Health/Red Barn).
The event is free and open to the public. Coffee, donated by Mag’s Coffee on Riverside Drive, and chocolate will be served. [Read more]
