Clarksville Parks & Recreation to offer Geocaching Class

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – Have you ever heard of geocaching? The City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department invites you to take part in a Geocaching Class on Saturday, May 7th from 8:00am until 10:00am at Billy Dunlop Park, located at 1930 East Boy Scout Road.

APSU’s GIS Center and Oak Ridge Receive $400,000 Grant for Cell Phone App Program

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – On a stormy Monday afternoon, while tornado sirens blared across the Austin Peay State University campus, Mike Wilson, manager of the school’s Geographic Information Systems Center, decided to talk about natural disasters.

“Suppose a tornado rips through here,” he said, knocking on his wood desk to ward off the suggestion. “If that happens, local officials will need to do a preliminary damage assessment. That’ll go to the state, and the governor will make a decision on whether to call in FEMA for a natural disaster. This app speeds that up.”

Wilson motioned to his Android mobile phone. A year ago, his office, in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, developed an innovative new cell phone application known as the Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK). The application allows emergency responders to document immediately any damage they come across following a disaster. [Read more]

Montgomery County 911 Center selected as Horizon Award Recipient

The recent installation of a state of the art Next Generation 911 capable Public Safety Answering Point with vendor guarantee to provide the hardware and software necessary to meet the new NG911 standard when adopted at no costs for the next four years, has garnered APCOs prestigious Horizon Award. The system consist of a 16 position PC based PSAP which are all configured identically for cross discipline capability. Additionally, the new PSAP is totally compatible with the computer aided dispatch system including data acquisition, GPS and AVL graphical display. Two parallel positions are provided outside the E911 area, one offsite PSAP/Console position is located at the Sheriff’s Office and another on-site PSAP/Console position is located in the Emergency Operations Center to provide redundancy as well as command and control capabilities.
