April 15, 2013

Gateway Chamber OrchestraClarksville, TN – In 1907, the great Austrian composer Gustav Mahler had a bad year. First, he lost his job as director of the Vienna State Opera. Then, in July, his young daughter Maria died after a brief illness. While grieving this loss, Mahler was diagnosed with a terminal heart condition.

In the months that followed, the composer found solace in a book of Chinese Tang Dynasty poetry titled “The Chinese Flute.” As he read the works, translated into German, a composition slowly took shape in his head.

APSU renaming concert hall after George and Sharon Mabry

October 22, 2012

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In 2010, a group of Clarksville residents, led by local lawyer Evans Harvill, set out on a mission to rename the state-of-the-art concert hall in Austin Peay State University’s Music/Mass Communication Building.

For more than 30 years, these individuals had enjoyed world-class musical performances presented by Drs. George and Sharon Mabry, and they thought it a shame that the two long-time APSU music faculty members didn’t have something properly honoring their service to the community.

February 26th concert to showcase Clarksville’s newest semi-professional Gateway Choir

February 24, 2012

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – The city of Clarksville is deceptively large. Sure, there’s the small town charm of Franklin Street and the local university, but spread over about 95 square miles, more than 130,000 people call the city home. “We feel Clarksville should have an orchestra of its own, and there should be a choral component to go along with that,” Dr. Gregory Wolynec, APSU associate professor of music, said. [Read more]
