This show is based around music and songs of Johnny and June Carter Cash and features 33 individual numbers mixing the voices of the cast in a harmonious blend. The first act’s music was positive and celebrated southern life, while the second half takes a somewhat darker tone most likely due to the admitted drug use by Cash. [Read more]

Down the rabbit hole, Lana’s Dance Center students takes the audience on a trip to Wonderland

December 20, 2009

Christmas in Wonderland

Christmas in Wonderland

Lana’s Dance Center hosted their version of the children’s classic “Alice in Wonderland,” to a packed house at the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University Saturday evening. The program featured almost 200 of Lana’s students ranging from age 3 to adulthood, and 35 support personnel whose hard work made it all come together.

The show consisted of 2 acts with 27 scenes. As with any recital the audience empathized along with children driven to tears by stage fright, to enjoying performances by those whose gifts were clearly showcased. The Queen of Hearts, The Alices, and the Cheshire Cat were the highlights of the evening. However each and every child gave their all, and every parent should be justifiably proud.

Immerse yourself into “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the Roxy Regional Theatre

November 15, 2009

Set in the romantic past of New Orleans Blanche DuBois’s neurotic and genteel pretensions are no match for the brutish realities of her brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski.

StreetcarNamedDesireThe Roxy Regional Theatre is currently staging the Tennessee Williams play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

To fully understand the intricacies of this masterpiece play, in this writers opinion you just have to come from the south. Otherwise it is all too easy to miss the subtle interplay of these delicious personalities as they intertwine in a tapestry that is as old as, well the south.

You have Blanche DuBois the socialite (Alicia Kelly); the submissive wife Stella (Chase Kamata); Stanley the abuser (Justin Barnum); the dotting son Harold (Brenden Cataldo); among others. The acting was tight, performers seamlessly melding into their roles as if they had been born to them.

Cold wet weather could not drown out the spirit at the 2009 NCC Intertribal Powwow

October 13, 2009

ncclogoThe Native Cultural Circle closed out their 12th Annual Intertribal Powwow Sunday. The Powwow showcases the culture, heritage, and traditions of all Native Americans. The Powwow opened Saturday morning with the third annual Trail of Tears Memorial Walk.

The walk remembers the plight of the Native Americans forced from their ancestral homes to the Indian territory in what became the State of Oklahoma. Diary records of the removal mentioned Port Royal, the last stop before leaving Tennessee, as an encampment site where the Cherokee stayed to re-supply, grind corn and rest. Hundreds of Cherokee died during their trip west, and thousands more perished as a consequence of relocation.
