Second Quarter ends Strong, but Investors remain Cautious

Clarksville, TN – While the markets managed solid gains over the last three months, investors continue to measure their enthusiasm as the U.S. economy maintains a less-than-robust growth trend heading into the second half of the year.
After a hesitant start to 2014, the markets gained momentum as the winter doldrums gave way to slow spring growth. But ever-present concerns over the Fed’s imminent move to wind down its quantitative easing program and eventually raise rates again have kept stock market euphoria at bay.

Austin Peay State University Botanical Garden showcases area’s rare and endangered plants

Clarksville, TN – A few years ago, three tall, flowering cherry trees grew on the western side of Austin Peay State University’s Sundquist Science Complex. They provided a nice, welcoming entry into the building, but in 2007, Tennessee suffered from a record-setting drought.
Temperatures reached 113 degrees Fahrenheit that summer, and by the fall, the 20-foot tall trees were dead.

Clarksville, TN – With a thin economic calendar, U.S. investors typically focus on other things. Sometimes, that’s earnings reports (which have been generally good). Other times, it’s overseas developments.
While the economic situation seems to be improving in the United Kingdom and in Europe, the rest of the world is looking a bit shakier. There have been a number of concerns about individual countries in recent weeks (China, Turkey, Argentina, and so on), but these concerns appear to have now gelled into anxieties about emerging economies in general, which has weighed against U.S. stock market sentiment.

2014 Slate of Exhibits Announced
Clarksville, TN – The drawings and paintings of local artist Bob Privett will be on display at the Planters Bank-Hilldale Gallery from Thursday, January 2nd – Wednesday, February 5th.
In his exhibit titled, “Retrospective—Inspirations from April through December,” Privett shares paintings and drawings of people he met and places he visited while traveling through the United States, Canada, and Europe.

APSU student Chris Hayes spends summer at famed CERN laboratory

Clarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University student Chris Hayes returned to Clarksville last summer, after spending nine weeks at the famed CERN laboratory in Switzerland, his friends and professors asked him what he thought of Europe.
“I said, ‘Well, I think it looks a lot like East Tennessee, except that the signs are in French,” he said. “It felt very much like I was at home.”

APSU Provost Lecture Series to have History professor present at next session

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University history professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.
Dr. Jason Verber, assistant professor of history, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 11th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The title of his presentation is “Germans in the French Foreign Legion.”

Dow soars to new heights

Clarksville, TN – At the end of February, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed just shy of its all-time high.
Less than a week later, the index fulfilled its promise, trading as high as 14,286.37 to break both its record close of 14,164.53, on October 9th, 2007, and its intraday high of 14,198.10, reached around the same time.

Austin Peay State University Distinguished music alumna Jeanie Darnell to give free concert September 20th

Clarksville, TN – Internationally known soprano and Austin Peay State University alumna Jeanie Darnell is returning to her alma mater at 7:30pm on September 20th for a guest recital in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Concert Hall.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will include the complete Liederkreis, Op. 39 of Robert Schumann, several beautiful, romantic songs of Rachmaninoff and Liszt and a new song cycle by Lori Laitman, one of America’s most performed contemporary composers.
