New minor at APSU to help pre-professional health students prepare for graduate programs

Clarksville, TN – When a student comes to Austin Peay State University wanting to be a doctor, he or she can pretty much major in any field. Typically, students enroll in biology, chemistry or psychology programs, but a few have been known to get degrees in subjects such as English or history.
“But they have to fulfill a number of prerequisites in order to go to med school,” Dr. Cindy Taylor, professor of biology, said.
Those prerequisites include several courses in science-related fields, such as biology and chemistry, and many professional health graduate programs mandate that students complete a certain number of volunteer hours and job-shadowing experiences before they apply for admission. [Read more]

APSU Expands Opportunities
Clarksville, TN – More Austin Peay State University students are studying abroad.
During the 2010-11 academic year, 132 APSU students took a course or pursued a study-abroad program outside the U.S. That’s up from 88 students in 2009-10.
“That’s a significant increase,” said Tina Rousselot de Saint Céran, coordinator of International Education at APSU. “I’m seeing about five students a day on average, and while that keeps me busy, I would like more in my office.”
Now, APSU wants the growing trend to continue, making sure even more students know about the opportunities in and benefits from studying abroad with APSU’s new initiatives. [Read more]
Clarksville Academy Act Score surpasses State and National Average

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Academy student’s ACT school average has surpassed the 2010-2011 state and national average. CA students averaged a 24.6 composite ACT score while the Montgomery County School System average was a 20.3, the state average was a 19.5 and the national average was 21.1.
The ACT is a national college admissions examination used to evaluate the achievement of high school students in the four core areas of English, reading, math and science. [Read more]
Community Arts Program at APSU Hosts Inaugural Musical Theater Camp

Clarksville, TN – Last Friday afternoon, a new musical premiered at the Austin Peay State University Music/Mass Communication Building’s Concert Hall. The show, “Intergalactic Space Trip,” was an ambitious, 15-minute production, featuring several musical numbers sung in a half dozen different languages.
When the cast, made up of local 8 to 12 year olds, took their final bow at the end of the show, the parents sitting in the audience agreed that it was a success. They were happy to see what their children had learned in only five days.

APSU Choir and Chamber Singers Examine “The Seasons” During April 25th Concert

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Choir and the APSU Chamber Singers are distilling an entire year into its most basic, visceral elements later this month with their final concert of the semester, “The Seasons.”
The performance, which begins at 7:30pm on April 25th in the APSU Music/Mass Communication Building, will feature noted composers’ musical interpretations of the four different seasons, with works being sung in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish and German. [Read more]

Wishful Thinking for School Children for the Coming Year

I saw an ad that described a huge giveaway of thousands of dollars for the person who wins and another equal amount for the charity the person chose to write about. It started my thinking about what would be an ideal situation for the children who will soon be starting back to school.
The first thing I would wish for them is that each and every child would have a good breakfast every morning (and adequate food for the entire day, of course!). According to the Child Nutrition Fact Sheet, missing breakfast and experiencing hunger can impair a child’s ability to learn. Quite a number of studies have linked hunger with lessened recall and poor math skills. Regardless of any studies, it just makes common sense that a child who is hungry is not as focused on learning.
