January 4, 2015

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – The discussion of American military history can be approached in a seemingly endless variety of ways. With so many tactical, political and societal viewpoints to be considered, even the most educated scholars or enthusiastic students can become lost in a sea of information.

But what if the focus was narrowed to the people, places and events at the core of these historic conflicts?

New APSU class combines service learning with study abroad

June 6, 2014

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On a cold, overcast morning in November, hundreds of well-dressed shoppers huddled against the wind outside a west London British Red Cross store. In America, this type of establishment is simply referred to as a thrift store, but in England, these shops tend to be a little swankier.

“What we think of as a thrift store is not really the same as their thrift stores,” Tracy Nichols, Austin Peay State University communication instructor, said. “Some of their stores are like upscale, New York boutiques.”

Austin Peay State University exploring cutting-edge friction stir welding process

September 30, 2012

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In 1991, The Welding Institute in England discovered a strange new method for joining two metals together without melting the two pieces in a traditional fusion welding process.

The process, known as friction stir welding, softened and deformed the metals and then forged them together as one using a rotating tool. The welding process used heat and force to join the metals, similar in nature to the way blacksmiths forged swords and armor in the Middle Ages.

“It’s a grand opening/going out of business deal.”

The “grand opening” refers to some new works he’s including in the exhibit. The “going out of business” phrasing hints at Diehr’s upcoming retirement after 42 years of teaching – 30 of those years as a professor, art department chair and first dean of the College of Arts and Letters at APSU.
