We hear the whispers of this ideal within the words of the Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The generation of Americans which fought to free us from the tyranny of Europe in the late 18th Century probably could not have grasped how these words, and the spirit of the ideal they reflect would be used by subsequent generations to form the nation we live within today.

Clarksville Community Black History Council to celebrate Emancipation August 8th-10th

Emancipation ProclamationClarksville, TN – Starting August 8th through August 10th there will be a series of events to celebrate Emancipation sponsored by the Clarksville Community Black History Council

On Thursday, August 8th, there will be a Spiritual Convocation at Greater Missionary Baptist Church beginning at 7:00pm.

“Sixteen pastors have been selected across racial, cultural and church denominational lines will discuss four areas connected to the emancipation: bondage, slavery, freedom and unity,” said Pastor Jerry Jerkins.

Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War - CW150 CommissionClarksville, TN – The United States Colored Troops Living History Association’s annual national meeting will be October 19th-21st in Clarksville, TN at Riverview Inn, 50 College Street.

The United States Colored Troops Living History Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote and accurately interpret the history of the United States Colored Troops of the American Civil War and those that supported their efforts to abolish slavery and preserve the Union and to educate the public and promote research of the history and legacy of those who served in the Civil War. Clarksville-Montgomery County to Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Town’s Surrender to Union Naval Forces

Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War - CW150 CommissionMontgomery County, TN – The Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War Sesquicentennial or CW150 Commission is preparing for the 150th anniversary of the “Surrender of Clarksville.”

To commemorate this historic event, the CW150 Commission will host a ceremony marking the date on Sunday, February 19th, 2012 at 2:00pm at Fort Defiance Civil War Park.
