Dunbar Cave State Park, Port Royal State Historic Park to hold National Trails Day Hikes, June 1st

Tennessee State ParksNashville, TN – On Saturday, June 1st, 2019, Tennessee State Parks will celebrate National Trails Day with free guided hikes at all 56 state parks. Dunbar Cave State Park and Port Royal State Historic Park will be holding hikes led by park rangers.

This will be the third of the state parks’ signature hikes this year, following First Day Hikes in January and Spring Hikes in March. Thus far, 4,787 park visitors have participated in the hikes.

Tennessee State ParksNashville, TN – Tennessee State Parks will offer free, guided hikes at all 56 state parks the day after Thanksgiving, November 23rd, 2018. Dunbar Cave State Park will be holding an “After Thanksgiving Hike” Wednesday.

“Tennessee’s state parks are once again offering the opportunity to get outdoors the day after Thanksgiving to engage in healthy, fun activities,” said Brock Hill, deputy commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. “It’s a chance to explore the state parks with loved ones around the holidays, with skilled rangers leading the way.”

This 144-acre park in Clarksville is situated around Dunbar Cave which has the distinction of being the 280th largest cave complex in the world, stretching 8.5 miles toward the center of the earth.

The entrance to Dunbar Cave was inhabited by local prehistoric peoples for thousands of years before settlers arrived.

Clarksville’s Dunbar Cave State Park Programs for February 14th – 17th, 2018

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TNDunbar Cave State Natural Area has been a State Park since 1973. The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs during the year. There are programs for children and adults.

The upcoming events include: Entering the Underworld, Dunbar Cave Jeopardy and Duck, Duck, GOOSE.

Tremendous turnout for Cooling at the Cave

Dunbar Cave State ParkClarksville, TN – On Saturday, July 29th, 2017, the Friends of Dunbar Cave held their annual Cooling at the Cave event at Dunbar Cave State Park from 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Cooling at the Cave is a family event. This year’s music was provided by Cumberland Winds Jazz Project, an 18-piece ensemble that was perfect for the venue.

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – On Saturday July 29th, 2017 from 3:00pm-5:00pm, come out to Dunbar Cave State natural Area for the annual Cooling at the Cave event. Cooling at the Cave is a Clarksville tradition that goes back over 100 years. Join the Friends of Dunbar Cave and enjoy live music and refreshments at the cool cave entrance.

Prior to air conditioning being widely available, locals would gather at the mouth of the cave to enjoy the cool air gently blowing from the mouth of the cave.  Many concerts wear held there as people would fellowship and beat the heat of summer.

Dunbar Cave State Park to host Student Volunteers on Tennessee Promise Saturday

Dunbar Cave State ParkClarksville, TN – Tennessee State Parks are offering volunteer events across the state to help Tennessee Promise scholars log community service hours on Saturday, June 24th, 2017.

Get some of your Tennessee Promise hours knocked out by volunteering at Dunbar Cave State Park. They could use your help to repaint the fence around the parking lot. They will provide the paint and the brushes, you provide the labor! It is recommended that you wear old clothes and shoes as painting can be messy.

Dunbar Cave State Park to hold National Trails Day hike, June 3rd

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – On Saturday, June 3rd, 2017, Dunbar Cave State Park will celebrate National Trails Day with a one mile hike on our Short Loop Trail. This is a moderate hike so wear good walking shoes and bring water.

The hike will start at 1:30pm and last until around 2:30pm. Everyone is to meet outside at the Visitor Center.

Spring Fling at Dunbar Cave set for Saturday, May 13th

Dunbar Cave State ParkClarksville, TN – On Saturday, May 13th, the Friends of Dunbar Cave (FODC) will be holding their annual Spring Fling event. FODC is anticipating a good turnout and has planned lots of free activities for the whole family.

All activities begin at the Visitor’s Center and are free of charge. Event will be rain or shine. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Dunbar Cave State Park to hold First Day Hike on January 1st, 2017

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – Dunbar Cave State Park located at 401 Old Dunbar Cave Road will hold a First Day Hike on January 1st, 2017. Come out and join them on their first hike of the year! The hike will start at 8:30am and end around 9:30am.

They will walk the 1 mile Short Loop Trail and see if any animals are out and stirring. This is a moderate hike so wear good walking shoes. It is suitable for all ages.

Everyone will meet up at the Dunbar Cave Visitor Center.
