The Clarksville art scene is alive and thriving at Riverfest

September 15, 2010

Riverfest 2010A former resident of the Boston and Washington, D.C. areas, I have been fortunate to see some great artworks in my life. I’ve also witnessed the recent “Emperor’s New Clothes” variety (otherwise called “modern art” by some). My feelings towards some of the obscenities fostered on the public in recent years as “art” cannot be printed in this format. One only has to walk through the National Art Gallery where the display is chronological to see how talent somehow was replaced with publicity stunts to see how some artists have sold their souls to pure unadulterated “selling a bill of goods to the unsuspecting” to see what I mean.

Clarksville Architectural Heritage Tour Features Treasures in Our Midst

August 2, 2010

Whose backyard was reported to have a small plane crash when a new work of art was installed? What local church outgrew its beautiful Gothic sanctuary and renovated its gymnasium into the present-day area of worship? What local home now for sale was the previous residence of the ticket agent for the train station in the early 1900s? What local museum may be named in a Viet Nam era protest song?

If you had been a participant on Day 2 of the Architectural Heritage Tour, you’d know the answers to these questions.

The second day of the Architectural Heritage Tour, part of the Sixth Annual Clarksville Writer’s Conference, presented eight locations that tell more tales of Clarksville history. An additional six members of the Clarksville community joined the previous participants on a bus tour never to be forgotten for its variety and beauty (in addition to that of the ladies on the bus!).

Supporting the arts in our city

June 6, 2010

A comment made by someone at Thursday’s art walk struck me as really quite insightful, they pointed out just how much the arts community in Clarksville, TN has grown.

Indeed with events like the First Thursday Art Walk, the Customs House Museum, the D.A.C. Gallery, the new APSU Downtown Gallery, Jammin’ in the Alley, Beachaven’s Jazz on the Lawn, Silke’s Old World Bread’s Evening with the Artist, the professional performances conducted by the Roxy Regional Theatre, the Community Concert Association’s Concert Series, Rivers & Spires, Riverfest, and the many events sponsored by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, they have a point!
