APSU makes campus, public aware of road projects

Clarksville, TN – As Austin Peay State University prepares for the start of the 2011-12 academic year, the campus community and the public should be aware of the various city and campus construction projects to plan alternate routes to and from campus.
Near APSU, the intersection of North Second and College streets is closed while the Tennessee Department of Transportation continues sewer repairs. This is scheduled to last six to eight weeks. If driving to campus from Wilma Rudolph Boulevard, College Street can be accessed up to Fourth Street and Home Avenue.

Registration open for Contestants to participate in the 2012 Miss Tennessee USA and Teen USA Pageants

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville will host the 2012 Miss Tennessee USA and Miss Tennessee Teen USA Pageants at the Austin Peay State University Music and Mass Communications Building Concert Hall on October 7th through 8th, 2011.
Pageant officials have announced that applications are being accepted from young women throughout the state who would like to compete in this year’s Miss Tennessee USA and Teen USA Pageants. Applications for the pageant can be found on www.misstennesseeusa.com under the “Apply Now” section.

APSU Students produce Monograph on City’s Public Art Pieces

Clarksville, TN – Throughout the city of Clarksville, a number of statues and other pieces commemorate the history of the local community, honor heroes and celebrate the spirit of the town.
There’s the statue of John Montgomery, for whom Montgomery County is named, located in front of City Hall, facing Strawberry Alley downtown. The legend of Wilma Rudolph, Clarksville’s most famous woman athlete who was the first female to win three gold medals in the Olympics in 1960 in Rome, Italy, is preserved in her classic crossing-the-finish-line pose at McGregor Park at the intersection of College Street and Riverside Drive. Northeast Middle School Students perform Civil War play

Clarksville, TN – Lauryn Jennings, Ariana Nelson and Brianna Tyre, 8th grade students at Northeast Middle School, performed their short play “Nannie Haskins: Tolerating the Enemy” at the Customs House Museum on Saturday, June 11th.
Tyre played the part of the Southern Woman, Nelson was Nannie Haskins and Jennings performed the part of the Northern Woman.

Maynard Presented with 2011 Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy

Clarksville, TN – The Tennessee Board of Regents recognized the generosity of local businessman James Maynard on April 26th by presenting him with the 2011 Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy.
Maynard, a 1956 graduate of Austin Peay State University, has long been a supporter of the University. Most recently, he created the Maynard Family Endowment Scholarship, which provides financial assistance annually to a student from Montgomery County pursing a business degree at APSU.

Queen City Road Race Road Closures

Clarksville, TN – Downtown Clarksville and Austin Peay State University’s campus will be subject to traffic control on race day — May 1st from 12:15pm until approximately 2:30pm for the event.
The following streets on the campus will be affected for the 5K Races: Marion Street, Drane Street, Farris Drive, Robb Avenue, 8th Street, Henry Street and Hannum Street. In downtown, the following streets will be affected: North 2nd Street, Main Street, Public Square, Franklin Street, 1st Street from Franklin to Commerce Street, Commerce Street from 1st to 3rd Streets, 3rd Street to Franklin Street, University Avenue from Franklin Street to College Street, and College Street to 8th Street. On Tuesday, April 5th, the Chamber will be hosting a Women In Business event at 11:30am at the Riverview Inn, 50 College Street. Dale Thomas will serve as the Keynote Speaker. Born and raised in rural Mississippi, Dale Thomas pulls from her life history and the choices she made to teach “real life” lessons to each audience. Dale has been teaching for over 17 years and owns and operates a series of Boot Camps. They are workshops that educate and empower others to take their lives to the next level. The Boot Camps are topic specific and have gained national recognition including a documentary series on The Travel Channel entitled, “Cool Summer Camps”. She has been a special guest expert on The Dr. Phil Show, The Big Idea on CNBC, CMT, Vh1 and MTV. Dale is also the author of several books and empowerment CD’s. [Read more]
