Clarksville awarded grants to help fund Smith-Trahern Mansion restoration plan

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The Tennessee Historical Commission awarded the City of Clarksville a Historic Preservation Fund grant of $20,000 to prepare a plan for the restoration of the Smith-Trahern Mansion.

These funds represent sixty-percent of the project budget. In order to complete the project, a forty-percent match from local funds is required. Fundraising efforts by the City will continue, with some help already.

Edelweiss Club scholarship awarded to Austin Peay State University student

Clarksville Edelweiss ClubClarksville, TN – Eric Ezzell, a German major at Austin Peay State University, has been selected to receive the Clarksville Edelweiss Club Scholarship for 2012-13.

He was honored during an awards ceremony at the Edelweiss Clubhouse on April 11th and received a check from Jim Nolan, president of the Clarksville Edelweiss Club.

The article championed his career, mentioning such notable works as his 1964 opera “Natalia Petrovna,” but for those who knew Hoiby, his death left something unfinished – an unperformed flute concerto he wrote 17 years earlier.

Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club Congratulates Northwest High School Student Ashley Rhodes, Speech Contest Winner

Clarksville Sunrise Rotary ClubClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Sunrise Rotary Club held its 2012 Four-Way Test Speech Contest, Thursday, April 12th, on the campus of Austin Peay State University. Two high school students competed to win cash prizes and the opportunity to move forward to the Rotary District 6760 contest.

Ashley Rhoades, an 11th grade Northwest High School student, challenged 10th grade student Christian Dashcle for the esteemed prize. Both students were tutored by Northwest speech teacher Jaime Holder.

APSU alumna Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Academic Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The mayor of Montgomery County, who also is an Austin Peay State University alumna, was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 191 Academic Hall of Fame.

Mayor Carolyn Bowers (’68, ’79) was inducted Tuesday, April 10th during the APSU chapter’s initiation ceremony. As part of a permanent tribute, her name will be displayed on a plaque housed in the Woodward Library on the main campus.

Clarksville Civil War RoundtableClarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, April 18th at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Hospital. This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall. The meeting begins at 7:00pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.
