Fort Defiance Interpretive Center to host its popular Civil War Summer Camp again this year

Clarksville, TN – The Fort Defiance Interpretive Center is proud to host the City’s Civil War Summer Camp for history savvy youth. The Camp will be two, one-week sessions for boys and girls in the 5th and 6th grades this June.

Hilltop Supermarket to host Spring Festival fundraiser for Kenai Langley

Clarksville, TN – This Saturday, May 9th, Hilltop Supermarket is hosting “Karing for Kenai” Spring Festival. The Spring Festival is a fundraiser for 3-year old Kenai Payes Langley who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
There will be a yard sale from 7:00am until 3:00pm. Hilltop is still taking donations that can be dropped off at the store anytime.
Austin Peay State University students learn from award winning American slavery scholar Ed Baptist

Clarksville, TN – Slavery in the United States was officially abolished on December 6th, 1865 when the thirteenth amendment was ratified by three-fourth of the states. But while all remaining slaves became officially free on that day, the ripples from the United States’ violent history continue to be felt to this day.
Austin Peay State University students recently had an opportunity to converse with one of the preeminent experts on the history of slavery in the United States when they participated in an online question and answer session with journalist, and Cornell University history professor, Ed Baptist.

APSU named VETS Campus by state commission

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s longstanding support of military veterans has led the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) to name the University a Veterans Education Transition Support (VETS) Campus.
According to THEC, VETS Campus certification is awarded to higher education institutions that “not only prioritize outreach to veterans, but successfully deliver the services necessary to create a supportive environment where student veterans can prosper while pursuing their education.”

Clarksville, TN – GDP growth slowed to a 0.2% annual rate in the advance estimate for 1Q15, reflecting a variety of restraints (weather, West Coast port delays, the strong dollar, and a contraction in energy exploration), many of which are likely to be transitional. Consumer spending rose at a 1.9% pace (vs. +4.4% in 4Q14). Business investment fell, with “mining exploration, shafts, and wells” falling at a 48.7% annual rate.
Inventories rose more than anticipated, adding 0.7 percentage point to growth. Net exports subtracted 1.3 percentage points. Personal income was flat in March, but inflation-adjusted disposable income rose at a 6.2% annual rate in 1Q15 (which is likely to support consumer spending growth in 2Q15).

APSU recognizes outstanding faculty during 2015 Academic Awards Ceremony

Clarksville, TN – On April 28th, Austin Peay State University recognized several outstanding faculty members during the annual Academic Honors and Awards Ceremony in the Mabry Concert Hall.
The University’s top faculty honor, the APSU National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award, was presented to Dr. Nell Rayburn, professor of mathematics. Rayburn earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from Vanderbilt University, and in 1988, she arrived at APSU as an assistant professor.

Hilltop Super Market’s 6th Annual BBQ Cook Off gets bigger and better each year

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday, May 2nd, Hilltop Super Market held their 6th Annual BBQ Cook-Off. The weather perfect for the event. The sweet aroma of BBQ cooking drifted along the cool breeze that day.
People drifted in and around the BBQ cooking contest all day. Hilltop was selling BBQ, ribs, etc, that everyone was enjoying.
“This is a great event. It is a good way to kick off Spring. What more American thing to do on a Saturday than to enjoy BBQ. I really enjoyed it,” said Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson.
