Clarksville Lock StorageClarksville, TN – Clarksville residents’ unwanted shoes can help provide meaningful opportunities that many in developing nations need, which is why Clarksville Lock Storage has launched a shoe drive to collect 25,000 pairs of new or gently used shoes.

The shoes that the local business collects will be delivered to Soles4Souls–a non-profit social enterprise that creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Founded in 2006, the organization has distributed more than 30 million pairs of new and used shoes in 127 countries.

Clarksville Historic Urban Trails Brought to Life

Montgomery County Government TennesseeMontgomery County, TN – Local historian Carolyn Ferrell and Montgomery County IT ArcGIS Specialist Bryce Hester teamed up to bring three historic urban trails to life in Clarksville.

An urban trail is not a built path through natural scenery but a virtual trail that uses existing sidewalks and crosswalks to lead walkers through a route of interesting urban sights.

The trails Ferrell laid out entices walkers with open-air history lessons packed with interesting historical tidbits about Clarksville’s past.

The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs during the year. There are programs for children and adults.

Austin Peay State University professor contributes to BBC animated special, “The Highway Rat”

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On Christmas day, when four million Britons saw a talking rat on the telly, they also glimpsed the creative work of an Austin Peay State University professor.

That evening, BBC One broadcast the animated special “The Highway Rat,” based on a popular British children’s book, and Scott Raymond, APSU assistant professor of animation and former DreamWorks animator, contributed about 20 seconds to the movie.

Austin Peay State University gives Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” a comic book makeover

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In the late 1940s, shortly after World War II, American comic books took on the daring subject of love. Jack Kirby, co-creator of Captain America, helped popularize these soap opera-like tales with his comic “Young Romance.”

The brightly colored covers—which would later inspire Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art creations—featured couples embracing or kissing, often with someone crying in the background.

APSU Police Promote Seatbelt Safety

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Campus Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for its fifth annual Seatbelts Are for Everyone (SAFE) campaign.

This statewide initiative is designed to increase seatbelt and child passenger safety restraint usage through the implementation of occupant-protection programs, public events and checkpoints throughout Tennessee. The SAFE campaign began February 1st, 2018 and concludes August 1st, 2018.
