In the month of May, the Museum will feature 2012 National Juried Exhibition, Outdoors In: The Paintings of Lori Putnam, The Unfortunate Fate: Titanic 1912, Civil War Medicine, Celebrating 1898: Artifacts & History, “Let’s Find Clocks” and so much more.

What do white gloves, fat quarters, a Civil War history lesson, blue ribbons and a tribute to an old friend all have in common? They are all part of this year’s Quilts of the Cumberland quilt show during Rivers and Spires here in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Madison Street United Methodist Church has hosted the Quilts of the Cumberland Quilt Show since its beginning four years ago. The Quilt show itself is held in the Activities/gymnasium area behind the main Sanctuary with the entrance off Commerce Street.
This year there were nearly 70 quilts exhibited, including a tribute to Bea Goddard, a local master quilter who passed away just 3 weeks ago. Bea’s family members were so gracious in lending some of her prize winning quilts as well as the quilt she was making for this year’s show, still in progress. On exhibit are also Bea’s many ribbons and awards. Bea will be missed by many in the quilting community.

APSU Provost Lecture Series to focus on Songs of War

Clarksville, TN – The challenges composers might face in memorializing war in their music will be one of the topics explored in the final installment of the Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.
Dr. Jeffrey Wood, professor of music at APSU, will present “Songs of War: Expressing the Inexpressible” at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 19th in the Morgan University Center, Room 103. The event is free and open to the public. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, April 18th at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Hospital. This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall. The meeting begins at 7:00pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.

Clarksville’s Civil War Story Video Wins Award from Tennessee Association of Museums

Clarksville, TN – “Crossroads of Change, Clarksville, Tennessee 1861-1865,” a locally-produced video providing a perspective of the impact of the Civil War upon Clarksville and its inhabitants during the years 1861 to 1865, was honored with a 2012 Certificate of Commendation from the Tennessee Association of Museums (TAM) at its annual convention held recently in Memphis Tennessee.
Actor Keith McCoy portrays a member of the US Colored Troops in this scene from “Crossroads of Change, Clarksville, Tennessee 1861-1865.” The video was researched, written and filmed in Montgomery County and is based on local journals and diaries of the Civil War era.

Clarksville, TN – The Roxy Regional Theatre continues its commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial with a limited run of Stephen Crane’s classic tale of heroism, “The Red Badge of Courage”, opening Friday, March 30th, at 8:00pm.
Eighteen-year-old Henry Fleming dreams of the thrill of battle as a young recruit, but his illusions are shattered when he comes face to face with the bloodshed and horrors of The Civil War.Telling of the experience of war from the point of view of an ordinary soldier, “The Red Badge of Courage” is considered the first modern war novel. Austin Peay State University History Department helps remember War of 1812 at local conference

Clarksville, TN – In terms of notoriety, the War of 1812 isn’t nearly as popular with the general public as, say, the American Revolution or the Civil War.
But the conflict did have a pivotal impact on the United States, giving us the national anthem, Gen. Andrew Jackson and even Tennessee’s nickname as the “Volunteer State.”
Dr. Kristofer Ray, APSU assistant professor of history, Deanna Carter, APSU graduate student, and Dr. Donald Hickey, Wayne State College professor of history, meet at the Tennessee, the Atlantic World and the War of 1812 symposium in Nashville.
