Record number of military graduates honored at APSU coin presentation ceremony

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Before Austin Peay State University celebrates its 88th Spring Commencement on May 5th, those active duty and military veterans graduating alongside their classmates were honored for their dedication in the classroom and in service to the nation.

A record number of graduating seniors were honored at the military and veteran graduate recognition and coin presentation ceremony on May 3rd, as 76 men and women were recognized and presented with APSU’s military coin, as well as a special cord to wear with their commencement regalia.

Dr. Kristine Nakutis named as executive director of the Austin Peay State University Center at Fort Campbell

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Dr. Kristine V. Nakutis has been hired as the executive director of the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell, effective May 15th, 2017.

A retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, Nakutis comes to Austin Peay from Jackson State Community College, where she has served as veterans affairs coordinator since 2015.

APSU alumni Lynn Von Hagen pursues research opportunity in Kenya

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – As a young person, Lynn Von Hagen dreamed of working with animals. She donated to conservation groups and gave her time and talents to Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, a domestic animal rescue organization in Hendersonvillem TN.

However, as is the case for many people, Von Hagen was forced to postpone her dreams of pursuing studies in zoology, ecology and animal biology and concentrate on earning a living.

APSU opens new pre-professional health office on campus

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The room, on the first floor of the Austin Peay State University Sundquist Science Complex, is softly lit with lamps shining against beige walls. To the left is a plush leather couch, and in the back, beneath a white dry erase board, is a table for students to gather and study.

The space feels almost like the living room of someone’s home or an exclusive lounge in a private club. But this calming area is actually the new office of the Pre-Professional Health programs at APSU. [Read more]

New minor at APSU to help pre-professional health students prepare for graduate programs

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – When a student comes to Austin Peay State University wanting to be a doctor, he or she can pretty much major in any field. Typically, students enroll in biology, chemistry or psychology programs, but a few have been known to get degrees in subjects such as English or history.

“But they have to fulfill a number of prerequisites in order to go to med school,” Dr. Cindy Taylor, professor of biology, said.

Those prerequisites include several courses in science-related fields, such as biology and chemistry, and many professional health graduate programs mandate that students complete a certain number of volunteer hours and job-shadowing experiences before they apply for admission. [Read more]
