Poet, Zone 3 Press contributor, Norman Dubie wins 2016 Griffin Poetry Prize

Clarksville, TN – Zone 3 Press, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Center for Excellence in Creative Arts’ literary press, is proud to congratulate poet Norman Dubie, whose latest collection of poems, “The Quotations of Bone,” was recently awarded the 2016 Griffin Poetry Prize.
Included in Dubie’s award-winning collection is the long poem, “The Fallen Bird of the Fields,” which was itself the first chapbook published by Zone 3 Press. Published in 2010, “The Fallen Bird of the Fields” represented both a literal and metaphorical uniting of themes and disciplines.

APSU Provost Lecture Series: Photography professor Susan Bryant to present October 3rd

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University photography professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.
Susan Bryant, APSU professor of photography, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, October 3rd, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. She will discuss and provide a brief history of the of the 19th century photography method known as the wet plate collodion process.

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University art professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.
Barry Jones, interim chair of the APSU Department of Art, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, September 26th, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. His lecture will be about the “Common Hope” community art project he developed this year.

Clarksville, TN – Faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University recently announced a number of publications, conferences and credentials as part of their professional and scholarly activities.
Chris Burawa, director of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, has had several professional developments. He translated from Icelandic a short story by Óskar Magnússon, “Dr. Amplatz,” which will be published in Best European Fiction 2014 by Dalkey Archive Press. [Read more]
Robert Penn Warren Circle attracts nationally-known scholars

Clarksville, TN – Robert Penn Warren is the only writer to date with three Pulitzer Prizes, two in poetry and one in fiction. In 1980, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter, and in 1986, Warren was named the first Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by the Library of Congress.
His senior year was spent at Clarksville High School prior to his attending Vanderbilt University. Although he had been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, he was unable to enter school there because during the summer, his brother had tossed either a stone or piece of coal that landed in Robert Penn’s eye; this eventually resulted in blindness and the removal of his left eye. While at Vanderbilt, Warren became a member of a writers’ group known as The Fugitives and the rest is history. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN – Several times during the conversation, the name Leopold was whispered. The three Austin Peay State University professors were referring to a fictional character played masterfully by Bugs Bunny in the 1949 Warner Brothers Looney Tunes cartoon “Long-Haired Hare.”
Barry Jones, APSU associate art professor, spoke in a quiet, reverential tone when mentioning the name. Kell Black, art professor, said it a bit more forcefully. But it was Dr. Gregory Wolynec, professor of music and conductor of the Gateway Chamber Orchestra, who almost shouted the name with gusto. He has a special fondness for the character since Bugs Bunny is in fact impersonating the famed British conductor Leopold Stokowski. [Read more]
APSU has 20 Faculty chosen as Summer Faculty Research Fellows

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University had twenty faculty members chosen as awardees in the 2012 Summer Faculty Research Program (SRFP), which encourages the development of research/creative activity projects at the University.
The SFRP awards up to $5,000 for selected proposals by tenured or tenure-track faculty to develop a research or creative activity project that should place them in a better position to seek external funding.

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University share their recent professional and scholarly activities.
Chris Burawa, director of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, had an article, titled “An Interview with Afaa Michael Weaver,” published in the Summer 2011 edition of Contemporary Literature. The article also was written by Cynthia Hogue and Stacey Waite. Burawa also will have a poem, “Dripping Surgery,” to appear in the October 2011 edition of Hayden’s Ferry Review. [Read more]

Clarksville, TN– Most people have a reluctance, even a fear, of trying new things. A healing technique that has a Japanese name and involves another person touching your body may make many Tennesseans feel that it’s not something they want to encounter.
Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced “jin-shin-jit-soo”) may seem new and different, but I can assure you it’s neither something to avoid nor is it something to fear. It is an age-old healing technique that originated in Japan about 1900 when Jiro Murai, a philosopher, recovered from a life-threatening illness after he rediscovered its methods. The words themselves mean “the art of the Creator in the person of compassion.”
This healing art involves having a therapist gently touch specific points on one’s body while you lie fully clothed on a massage table with, if you like, a small pillow under your head and a larger one under your knees.
