Clarksville, TN – A sharp drop in China’s stock market rattled investors’ nerves around the world. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 1,000 points at the open on Monday, regrouped, and then fell again, leaving the benchmark index down 588.
Volatility continued throughout the week, but investors were encouraged by China’s efforts to shore up its stock market and support economic growth. Oil prices fell further, but picked up by the end of the week. The market volatility has left investors struggling to figure out where share prices should be. Volatility is expected to decrease in coming days, but may continue for a while.

Interpreting Wall Street’s wild swings benefits from perspective

Clarksville, TN – The stock market sell-off continued Monday, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and other major domestic indices saw a significant drop in early morning trading, regained some ground as the day progressed, but still closed down 3% to 4% for the day.
Global markets were also down, notably in China, Hong Kong, Germany and the United Kingdom. The pullback appears to be driven by concern over slowing global growth, particularly as China’s economy (one of the world’s largest) falters, as well as the drop in commodity prices, namely oil.

Clarksville, TN – China’s leadership wants the yuan to become an important reserve currency, but that means that the country would have to let the currency float freely and be set by market forces. The People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, decided to alter its exchange rate regime.
The currency is allowed to trade in a 2% band around a level announced before the markets open. The PBOC said that this base level would simply be set at the previous session’s close (rather than taken out of the air).

Clarksville, TN – For much of the 20th century, Chinese music has embraced and incorporated Western instruments such as the piano and violin. Following the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, however, the revival of traditional folk music paved the way for Chinese people to rediscover the instruments that are unique to their culture.

Southern Watercolor Society Presents Its Juried Exhibition at the Customs House Museum

Clarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum is pleased to host the Southern Watercolor Society’s 38th Annual Juried Exhibition this May. The show features eighty-seven paintings, eleven coming from Tennessee artists.
Exhibits Curator, Terri Jordan, states “I am honored to have the Southern Watercolor Society (SWS) present its 38th Annual Juried Exhibition here at the Customs House Museum. We have featured the talents of some of the best artists living in the South and I am happy to add the SWS to that list.”

Clarksville, TN – In recent weeks, the U.S. stock market has reacted negatively to bad economic news out of Japan, China, and the euro area and positively to efforts by the corresponding central banks to spur growth. The European Central Bank did not make that extra effort on Thursday.
After strong hints that quantitative easing is on the way, the ECB’s Governing Council disappointed by failing to launch QE. ECB President Draghi indicated that further extraordinary measures could be employed “if needed.” The ECB staff and euro systems have stepped up technical preparations for QE, but Draghi seemed to suggest that there is no haste toward QE.

Clarksville, TN – There are a few key financial market themes of the last several weeks. While the outlooks for the domestic economy and Federal Reserve policy are important, U.S. investors are sensitive to developments in the rest of the world.
Basically, poor economic news from the euro area, China, or Japan is a negative for U.S. equities, while any efforts by foreign central banks to address weakness are seen as a positive.
Japan posted a second quarterly decline in real GDP. Manufacturing gauges for the euro area and China were weak. The Bank of Japan extended its quantitative easing at the end of October.

September’s Market volatility extends into October

Clarksville, TN – The two weeks of trading this month took investors on a wild ride. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, posted its biggest point gain and loss back to back for the first time since 1997, according to the Wall Street Journal
Last Tuesday’s 273-point “Dow Dive” was reversed by Wednesday’s 275-point “Dow Wow.” But then the Dow slumped again, dropping 335 points on Thursday.

Montgomery County Historical Society to show “Dorothy Dix: An American Journalist” documentary film by Inga Filippo Monday, September 15th

Clarksville, TN – The new documentary film “Dorothy Dix: An American Journalist” will be highlighted at the next meeting of the Montgomery County Historical Society on Monday, September 15th at the Beach Civic Hall in the Veterans Plaza complex on Pageant Lane.
The meeting will start at 7:00pm. Inga Filippo, who researched and wrote the film script, will introduce the screening.

Several renowned musicians to visit APSU this year as Acuff Chairs of Excellence

Clarksville, TN – When Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto first premiered in Prague in October 1791, the famed piece sounded much different than what audiences often hear today.
The composer’s friend, Anton Stadler, used a basset clarinet in that first performance, but the instrument fell out of favor in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Modern performances of the work are simply faint echoes of the how the piece was originally conceived.
