APSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with “Migration is Beautiful” series

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Visual artist Favianna Rodriguez will visit Austin Peay State University this October and provide a presentation and poster design workshop as part of programming for Hispanic Heritage Month.

In preparation for her visit, students created several eye-catching posters that incorporated Rodriguez’s artwork. Students in APSU associate professor of art Mark DeYoung’s class, Design Center, created 19 posters.

Clarksville, TN – For the first time in the 80-plus-year history of The All State, the student newspaper of Austin Peay State University, a staff member was named among the best nationally at the annual Associated Collegiate Press conference held recently in Chicago.

Christy Walker, editorial cartoonist for The All State, was given a second-place individual award for her cartoon depicting Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan with religious items that accompanied an editorial about her private meetings with local religious officials. [Read more]

Christy Walker, editorial cartoonist for the newspaper, was named a finalist for an individual Pacemaker award, presented annually to the country’s top college journalists and college media outlets. [Read more]

Former Marine, survivor of USS Indianapolis to speak next month at APSU

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A Clarksville resident who survived the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis in July 1945 will speak extensively about the tragedy he endured at sea during an appearance next month at Austin Peay State University.

Edgar Harrell will tell about the sinking of the heavy cruiser, the largest casualty at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy, at 5:00pm, Friday, October 21st in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. His talk, sponsored by the Student Veterans Organization at APSU, is free and open to the public. [Read more]

Customs House Museum Celebrates Tennessee Artists with New Exhibits

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – Plein air is a term derived from the French phrase en plein air, which literally means ‘in the open air’. In the late 1800s the Impressionists ventured out of their studios into nature to investigate and capture the effects of sunlight and different times of day on a subject, creating a new style of painting. Jason Saunders may be painting far from the French countryside, but his landscapes of Tennessee are just as breath-taking.
