Austin Peay State University professor Andrea Spofford connects with pandemic-distanced friends by sending original poems on antique postcards

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Andrea Spofford had 50 antique postcards, a typewriter and a plan. 

A poet, essayist and Austin Peay State University (APSU) associate professor of English, Dr. Spofford created her plan in mid-March, around the time most states shut down in response to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

Poet, essayist & immigration advocate Marcelo Castillo to speak at APSU’s Asanbe Diversity Symposium

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In 2016, during an interview for the literary journal Ploughshares, award-winning poet and essayist Marcelo Hernandez Castillo said, “I wish I wasn’t afraid, I wish this wasn’t my reality.”

When Castillo was five, his family moved from Mexico to California, and even though he now has permanent resident status, he told Ploughshares, “That doesn’t mean I’m not still afraid, either for myself or for my family.”

A California native, Phillips was prepared to look west for a teaching opportunity when a friend suggested Austin Peay contact him for an open teaching position in the College of Business.

“One of the siblings was focused on being out half a million dollars in damages, while the other one was focused more on the sentimental aspect of having their family business destroyed,” Dr. Kim Coggins, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of psychological sciences and counseling, said.
