Summer Youth Program Under Way, Filling Up Quickly

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Youth Program is under way and openings at the various sites are filling up quickly! The Barksdale, Hazelwood, St. Bethlehem, Kleeman Center and Crow Center sites have met their registration capacities.

Summer Youth Program to begin June 6th

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Summer Youth Program will begin June 6th with the opening of program sites and will end July 15th.

The Summer Youth Program is a six-week day camp-type program that is offered each summer to youths, ages 6-16. Gyms at various locations are staffed with directors and assistants, who will help with playtime activities and provide free, instructional classes such as dance and karate.

Five APSU Professors Honored with Annual Socrates Award

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Five Austin Peay State University professors have been singled out by their students and peers as exceptional teachers this year, earning them one of the University’s top distinctions for tenure-track faculty members.

Michelle Rogers, biology instructor, Christina Chester-Fangman, assistant professor of library administration, Dr. Benita Bruster, assistant professor of teaching and learning, Dr. David Nelson, assistant professor of history, and Dr.Mercy Cannon, assistant professor of English, were named this year’s Socrates Award winners, an honor bestowed by APSU annually to teachers who have excelled in motivating and inspiring their students. CMCSS Announces Elementary Principal Appointments

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – Two new principals have been selected to fill the open positions at Byrns Darden and Burt Elementary Schools for the 2011-12 school year.

Diana Hara, currently assistant principal at Hazelwood Elementary, will be principal at Burt Elementary, replacing Irene Gudgeon who is retiring at the end of this school year.

Andy Lyons, currently assistant principal at Barkers Mill Elementary, will serve as principal at Byrns Darden Elementary. He replaces Michelle Rayle, who has been named as assistant principal at Northeast and Rossview High Schools. [Read more]

CMCSS Kindergarten Roundups Announced

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School SystemMontgomery County, TN – Kindergarten roundups in CMCSS give parents and guardians the opportunity to learn more about the kindergarten experience as their children begin their academic journey.

Children who attend also will receive a complimentary backpack filled with learning activities for the summer before starting school. The backpacks are provided by the CMC Education Foundation thanks to sponsors Valerie Hunter-Kelly of Keller-Williams Realtors and Clarksville Pediatric Dentistry.

APSU will be host to elementary, middle school teachers at STEM conference

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Elementary and middle school teachers will participate in a conference that will focus on strategies for integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) principles into instruction in grades K-8.

The conference will be held Saturday, October 2nd in the Claxton Building at Austin Peay State University.

Keynote speaker will be Michael Wilson, manager of the APSU Geographical Information Systems (GIS). His talk will focus on ways K-8 students can display experimental or research data. [Read more]
