Moore Magnet school principal announced

Kim B. Smith will be the principal at Moore Magnet School for the 2010-11 school year. She replaces Laura Black, who decided to return to the classroom.

Smith has been assistant principal at Minglewood Elementary for two years. She is a past Tennessee Teacher of the Year state finalist who has served in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System for 20 years at St. Bethlehem, Ringgold and Kenwood Elementary Schools. [Read more]

APSU to begin new fee schedule for out-of-state online students

Starting in July 2010, Austin Peay State University will offer a new fee structure for out-of-state students attending online courses exclusively through the institution.

The new fee program is called eRate, approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Instead of paying out-of-state tuition rates, which are roughly three times APSU’s in-state rates, eRate recipients will pay a rate that is 1.5 times the in-state tuition rate. Previously, online students living outside Tennessee paid the standard out-of-state rate. [Read more]

American Floyd to rock the Dunn Center

American Floyd, a Pink Floyd tribute band will be performing at the Austin Peay State University Dunn Center Saturday, May 15th at 7:00 pm. Tickets at $15 each and are available at the door which open at 6:00 pm. The Dunn Center is located at 320 Drane Street. Parking is free with handicap access. Additional parking is located across Drane Street, behind the Armory, in the Armory lot.

Pink Floyd, an English rock band, initially earned recognition for their psychedelic and space rock music, and later, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. [Read more]

H.O.P.E awards the Juan Vasquez scholarship to a minority student at APSU

The Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education fulfilled the second part of their mission today at Austin Peay State University’s Hispanic Cultural Center when H.O.P.E. Director Pastor Tommy Vallejos & President Elizabeth Valdez-Adamski awarded a $500 Juan Vasquez scholarship to Sophomore Myra DeCaba. Myra is studying International Business with a goal of entering the banking industry. She is a member of the Hispanic Cultural Center, The Latina Student Association. and several other honor societies.

APSU graduate student to receive 1st Best Thesis Award

Beginning with the Spring 2010 graduating class – and for subsequent commencements in May, August and December – the Austin Peay State University College of Graduate Studies will honor a graduate student whose thesis is judged worthy of a Best Thesis Award.

The first recipient is Claire Cain Teter, who will receive a Master of Arts in English during Spring Commencement on May 7th. Shortly before graduation rehearsal at 4:30 pm, Thursday, May 6th, she will receive a certificate and medal to wear at commencement.

Theses are based on qualitative or quantitative research methods. Teter’s thesis, titled “Living Room,” contains a series of brief descriptive pieces, a first-person narrative and fictional work. Her work was described by a committee member from the Graduate Research Council as “engaging and beautifully written.”

Teter’s thesis committee included adviser and chair Barry Kitterman, Dr. Amy Wright and Dr. Jill Eichhorn, all faculty members in the APSU Department of Languages and Literature.

For a graduate student to qualify, the thesis must be submitted by the standard two-week, prior-to-graduation submission deadline. A committee from the Graduate Research Council automatically judges any thesis submitted by the deadline.

“Honoring any student with a Best Thesis Award seems appropriate as the University continues to make research more of a focus for faculty and students,” said Dr. Dixie Dennis, dean of the College of Graduate Studies and associate provost of Grants and Sponsored Programs.

First Thursday Art Walk

You’re invited to join the merchants of Historic Downtown Clarksville for The monthly Art Walk, on April 1st from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Kendall Welsh from ARTifacts sent us this information about April’s artistic extravaganza.

Four diverse young artists will bringing their work to the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery in April for a month-long group exhibit. The show, which will feature APSU art alumni Janelle Costello, Caroline Tuzeneu, Sam Matthews and William Arnett Gentry, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 1, and it will run through May 1.

The show will feature startlingly original work, such as Costello’s diorama-like photography collages that depict surreal scenes of imagined narratives.

“The intent of this body of work is to invite the viewer to temporarily escape the mundane by accentuating the beauty of make-believe,” she said. [Read more]

APSU to present the first of the Winter Salon on ET Whickham at the Customs House Museum

Dr. Dixie Webb, Professor of Art History and Dean of the College of Arts & Letter, will present a slide show and lecture on local folk artist ET Wickham, at the Customs House Museum and
Cultural Center auditorium, on the corner of Commerce and South 2nd Streets on January 14 from 2:00PM to 3:00PM in historic downtown Clarksville.

From 1950 to his death in 1970, ET Wickham created a bevy of statues which featured Indian chiefs, politicians, patriots, and religious figures. The record shows that during this period he built over 30 life-size concrete statues.  Wickham’s art is a well kept secret and a cultural treasure trove. Sadly over the last few years the statues have been repeatedly targeted by vandals. His work is featured at the Wickham Stone Park for more information visit their web site.

Christopher Burawa, the Director of the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts pointed out “The philosophy behind the series is that Art can happen any time, any place”. In our community the Center certainly fulfills that goal admirably.
