G.I. Jobs magazine names APSU ‘Military Friendly School’

August 17, 2010

Austin Peay State UniversityAustin Peay State University has been named by G.I. Jobs magazine as Military Friendly School for 2011.

The honor ranks APSU in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide, according to a letter from the magazine’s publisher, Rich McCormack.

Military Friendly Schools were chosen based on a postsecondary institution’s policies, efforts and results used to recruit and retain military and veteran students, the letter noted. For instance, in early 2010, APSU President Tim Hall launched the Military Education Task Force to help foster a greater understanding of the needs in training and curriculum for military science and leadership programs. Forest Service Taps APSU Center of Excellence for Field Biology to Study Bat Population at LBL

August 15, 2010

Austin Peay State UniversityOn a muggy summer night, while cicadas and crickets screeched in the woods at the Land Between The Lakes Recreational Area, a couple of Austin Peay State University graduate students attached a small microphone to the top of a van. Once it was set, they drove slowly through the wooded natural area, collecting sounds they couldn’t hear with the naked ear.

Land Between the Lakes“The microphone records bat calls – high frequency sounds we don’t hear generally,” graduate student Seth McCormick said. “It records and makes a document of it, so we’re able to see the pattern of each bat call. That way we can determine what species of bats are present.”

McCormick and APSU grad student Morgan Kurz have made names for themselves within the scientific community in recent years because of their in-depth bat research. Their expertise led the U.S. Forest Service to contract with the APSU Center of Excellence in Field Biology this summer to monitor bat species in the 300-plus acre natural area. [Read more]

APSU Freshman to Live in Hall Named After Great-grandfather

August 3, 2010

Austin Peay State UniversityWhen Ben Rawlins decided to attend Austin Peay State University, he went online to look at the different housing options for incoming freshmen. His father sat next to him as he scrolled through the names of the residence halls, and both men stopped when one name appeared on the screen – Rawlins Hall.

“My dad was the one who really wanted me to stay in that dorm,” Ben said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

The residence hall’s name isn’t simply a coincidence. The dorm is named for Ben Rawlins’ great-grandfather, Dr. George Rawlins Jr., who taught at APSU from 1946 to 1964 and served as chair of the chemistry department.

Clarksville Architectural Heritage Tour Features Treasures in Our Midst

August 2, 2010

Whose backyard was reported to have a small plane crash when a new work of art was installed? What local church outgrew its beautiful Gothic sanctuary and renovated its gymnasium into the present-day area of worship? What local home now for sale was the previous residence of the ticket agent for the train station in the early 1900s? What local museum may be named in a Viet Nam era protest song?

If you had been a participant on Day 2 of the Architectural Heritage Tour, you’d know the answers to these questions.

The second day of the Architectural Heritage Tour, part of the Sixth Annual Clarksville Writer’s Conference, presented eight locations that tell more tales of Clarksville history. An additional six members of the Clarksville community joined the previous participants on a bus tour never to be forgotten for its variety and beauty (in addition to that of the ladies on the bus!).
