APSU political science professor launches symposium for young women

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University faculty member recently selected for the APSU Summer Faculty Research Fellows Program (SFRP) will conduct the first Young Women’s Leadership Symposium later this month on campus.
Dr. Marsha Lyle-Gonga, assistant professor of political science, will use the stipend awarded from the University’s SRFP to fund the symposium, scheduled for May 16th-17th. The two-day seminar is designed to increase the political efficacy of young women ages 18-24 through leadership development and civic engagement activities. [Read more]
APSU Student Clare Spielman to Attend Prestigious Max Planck Institute this Summer

Clarksville, TN – In a large, modern building situated in the northern industrial district of Freiberg, Germany, some of the world’s top scientists are attempting to understand the workings of the immune system, embryonic development and gene regulation.
That building is home to the internationally-renowned Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, and this summer, Austin Peay State University student Clare Spielman will work alongside investigators, conducting groundbreaking research of gene regulation mechanisms. [Read more]
Queen City Road Race results are now available

Clarksville, TN – On Saturday, May 1st, thousands gathered at Austin Peay Sate University’s Governors Stadium to participate in the 33rd Annual Queen City Road Race. This event is a Clarksville tradition promoting fitness and fun for all ages and features the 5K Relay, 5K Wheelchair/Hand-cycle, 5K and One Mile Movement.

New Exhibit Teaches APSU Students Nuts and Bolts of Hosting an Art Show

Clarksville, TN – For young artists, the grueling hours spent toiling away to create a new, original piece of artwork may actually be the easiest part of their chosen vocation. Getting someone to see and appreciate what they’ve made is the truly difficult task. That’s why Austin Peay State University adjunct art professor Mike Mitchell has added a professional practice component to the introductory sculpture class he now teaches on campus.
The students in that class, for their final project, are required to develop a viable exhibition of their work. That exhibit, “Third Dimension,” will be a unique fusion of art and music, which runs from 11:00am to 12:30pm on May 4th, in the APSU Trahern Building’s Room 104. The show, which is free and open to the public, will feature works by students in Mitchell’s class and a performance by Nashville musician Evan P. Donohue. [Read more]
APSU student awarded full scholarship to Stanford to pursue Ph.D. in statistics

Clarksville, TN – Although Casey McKnight was always a mathematics enthusiast, pursuing a career in mathematics was something she would not have dreamed of doing.
The senior at Austin Peay State University, who will graduate May 6th with a bachelor’s degree in math (concentration in statistics) and physics, was encouraged – even convinced – by a professor to consider a major in math after taking Statistics 3250 her freshman year.
“I took it and really hated it at first,” McKnight said, laughing about the hours she spent on stats assignments. “But I had really amazing professors who pushed me along the way. They all helped drive me.” [Read more]
APSU to award new chemical engineering tech degree to 50-plus candidates

Clarksville, TN – During Spring Commencement on May 6th, Austin Peay State University will graduate the first class of students to receive the new Associate of Applied Science in chemical engineering technology.
A total of 53 students will receive the degree, launched for the first time in Fall 2009. The degree program is housed in the APSU College of Science and Mathematics, which will send off its candidates at 10:00am, Friday, May 6th. [Read more]
APSU Foundation selects new members to serve for 2011

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Foundation has selected 10 new members for 2011.
The APSU Foundation provides the structure through which the University can work directly with special volunteers and community leaders to enhance the financial well being of the University. The Foundation’s purpose is to financially support the University.
The Foundation is a separate entity and is chartered by the state, with the authority to receive private gifts in support of the University. Through its executive committee, the Foundation makes its own policy decisions. The University provides administrative support to the Foundation. [Read more]
Eight APSU Physics Students to Participate in Coveted Summer Research Programs

Clarksville, TN – This summer, eight Austin Peay State University physics students will spread out across the country to take part in the prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at some of the nation’s top universities.
The REU program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, provides grant money for undergraduate students to participate in innovative new research. Northeast Middle School Students Win State Competition with Help from APSU

Clarksville, TN – The War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville is a large venue, with two levels of seating and a capacity for more than 1,600 people. When three Northeast Middle School students first entered the building last month, their eyes widened. One of them might have gasped.
That’s where they were supposed to perform the short play they wrote? With all those seats?
“We didn’t think we would do well at all,” Ariana Nelson, 14, said.
“We said, ‘our play is so lame,’” Brianna Tyre, 14, said.

Dr. Najmul Abedin, professor of public management, was designated Highly Commended Award Winner by the Emerald Group Publishing Limited in England for his article, titled “The ombudsman in developing democracies: The commonwealth Caribbean experience” published in the 2010 edition of International Journal of Public Sector Management.
