Acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller comes to APSU as Acuff Chair

October 26, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Several years ago, the internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller began a romantic relationship with an Australian citizen. Things went well at first, but when the couple looked at settling down in America, they encountered an unexpected obstacle – immigration.

Normally that isn’t too much of a problem for binational relationships. If the couple is serious, they’ll simple marry, allowing the other partner to remain in this country legally. But Miller’s situation was different. He was gay.

“If you have an international partner, but you’re not allowed to marry, how do you deal with that,” Marcus Hayes, associate professor of theater and dance at APSU, said. [Read more]

Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson

Clarksville, TN – In the early 20th century, some of the country’s leading African American writers – including Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes and Claude McKay – found a home for their works in the influential journal, “The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races.”

The magazine’s long-serving editor, W.E.B. Du Bois, the first African-American Ph.D. graduate of Harvard University, championed these writers, ushering in that pivotal period in American literature known as the Harlem Renaissance. But what many people don’t realize is that the literary movement was born out of the strained relationships between these writers, Du Bois and the journal’s white benefactors. [Read more]

Impacts of invasive species in freshwater ecosystems next APSU Provost Lecture Series

October 23, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Biological invasions have been attracting more attention in recent years. However, invasive species are not a new problem; historically, they have been transported to different geographical locations around the globe.

26th Annual APSU Percussion Ensemble Halloween Concert set for October 28th

October 22, 2011

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – “If I have to describe in one word what’s going to be going on with this concert,” Dr. David Steinquest said, leaning forward and rubbing his hands, “it would be ‘magic.’”

He lifted his eyebrows as he spoke, as if the word itself contained supernatural properties. It’s the type of showmanship one comes to expect from the Austin Peay State University professor of music, especially at this time of year.

Every October for the last 26 years, Steinquest has hosted the APSU Percussion Ensemble’s Halloween Concert – an enormously popular performance that blends music with the mayhem of the season. This year’s concert will consist of two performances at 6:00pm and 8:00pm on October 28th in the APSU Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall.
