Hazelwood Principal to Head Up Newest Elementary School

Montgomery County, TN – A veteran of public education for 33 years, Hazelwood Elementary Principal Rosanne Sanford has been named principal at Carmel Elementary School, scheduled to open in August 2012.
She will begin her work as Carmel principal in January. The Hazelwood principal position will be posted on Friday.
Rosanne Sanford has been named the principal at Carmel Elementary School when it opens.
Phase II construction of Austin Peay student housing now under way

Clarksville, TN – For the last few weeks, the Austin Peay State University community has watched the demolition of three student residence halls that have been a mainstay on the campus for more than three decades.
Now, another historical milestone will unfold, months after the new Castle Heights residence hall opened on campus. Construction for the second phase of the student housing complex is under way on Drane Street – and it has the potential to change the layout of the campus.

Charlie Koon elected President of the 2012 Class of Leadership Middle Tennessee

Murfreesboro, TN – Charlie Koon, Chief of Staff for the City of Clarksville, has been elected President of the 2012 Class of Leadership Middle Tennessee.
Koon has been committed to serving the area’s residents throughout his career. Before joining the Mayor’s office, he held several positions with Cumberland Bank & Trust and was also the owner of Mary’s Music. His community service includes the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, United Way, Riverfest Entertainment Committee and Leadership Clarksville.

PEG channel added to U-verse TV in Clarksville, Tennessee
Clarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville and AT&T Tennessee today announced that Public, Education and Government (PEG) programming provided by The City of Clarksville is now carried on AT&T U-verse® TV Channel 99.
This station is operated by Austin Peay State University (APSU). APSU’s GovTV channel provides its viewers live and rebroadcast coverage of OVC sports, classic arts showcase, NASA and various community events that also include Clarksville’s city council meetings. AT&T U-verse launched in Tennessee in December 2008.

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University is featured on the cover of the new AT&T Real Yellow Pages directory serving Clarksville and surrounding communities.
APSU is the first to appear on the Real Yellow Pages’ newly designed cover, which was unveiled November 16th during a public announcement on campus. The photograph depicts the excitement of men’s basketball at APSU, one of 15 sports programs offered by the University.

Austin Peay Senior Graphic Design Exhibit opens December 5th

Clarksville, TN – Re/Touch: the process of improving something with new touches, or alterations, to produce a finished work.
This word not only represents the culmination of works presented this Fall in a show of the same name, but also the education and experiences of nine highly creative graduating designers at Austin Peay State University. Jacquelyn Cordy, D. L. Zartner, Andy Blankenship, Matt Mixon, Brian Williams, Shafia Choudhury, Amber Barry, Carolyn Madison and Nathan Lee are part of a capstone course taught by Paul Collins, APSU assistant professor of art. Go Commando Donates $35,000 to Local Organizations

Clarksville, TN – The Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k presented by CDE Lightband announced Tuesday they would donate $35,000 to local non-profits and community organizations. The largest recipients, Clarksville Area YMCA and Fort Campbell Historical Foundation were on hand to accept the donations.
“The intention of the Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k will always be to give back to the community; this money emphasizes that mission in a big way,” Channel Lemon, one of the Race Directors, stated.

Austin Peay Provost Lecture Series features arts in economic hardships as next topic

Clarksville, TN – Despite what is happening in the economy, the arts can be a necessary component to hold a community together.
“In a time of such economic volatility, the arts are often overlooked as frivolous and less practical than other academic and technical skill areas, but frankly, the arts are a good investment for a community, a university and a family,” said Darren Michael, associate professor of acting and directing at Austin Peay State University.
Michael will discuss this topic in more detail as part of the next Provost Lecture Series. He will present “The Theatrical Stoplight: The Arts as an Educational, Social and Economic Cornerstone to the Community” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, November 17th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. New organization at APSU give voice to nontraditional students

Clarksville, TN – A sizeable portion of the Austin Peay State University population – around 42 percent – is made up of what is generally termed as nontraditional students. These individuals include single mothers, active duty military and veterans and just about anyone who didn’t enroll in college immediately after high school.
For years, these students struggled to create their own unique identity on the APSU campus, and this year they finally succeed with the formation of the Non-Traditional Student Society. The students initially chartered a chapter with the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. Then APSU’s Office of Student Life and Leadership approved the creation of the organization earlier this fall, giving these students a venue to network, support each other and voice their concerns. Austin Peay students named to prestigious Who’s Who Among College Students

Clarksville, TN – For more than 70 years, the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges has recognized a small number of campus leaders nationally for their academic and community achievements.
Schools across the country nominate their top students every fall for this prestigious designation, but only the top candidates out of thousands of nominees are bestowed with the honor. This year, only about 2,800 students nationwide were given this distinction, with 27 of those impressive individuals coming from Austin Peay State University. [Read more]
