The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – The artist Helen Hiebert’s dazzling hand-made paper creations, from her “Peace Balloon” to an elaborate dress known as the “Mother Tree Project,” somehow evoke the lighter and calmer aspects of the natural world.

From her studio in Portland, OR, her tranquil vision has earned her a reputation as one of the country’s most renowned hand papermakers, with exhibits around the world and even an appearance on the children’s program, “Sesame Street.” [Read more]

Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to discuss Earth’s atmosphere as a nuisance in astronomy

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Earth’s atmosphere, though necessary to support life, is a major nuisance to accurate astronomical work. Instrumentation has improved over the past few decades to a point that the time-tested techniques to account for the effects of the atmosphere on astronomical data are no longer sufficient.

“With major new astronomical surveys beginning, advances in the techniques to account for the atmosphere are needed,” said Dr. J. Allyn Smith, associate professor of physics and astronomy. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University students competing in CFA Institute Research Challenge

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Students from Austin Peay State University will be competing in the local challenge CFA Institute Research Challenge on March 5th in Nashville, TN.

Last year, nearly 2,500 students from more than 546 universities in 45 countries participated in the CFA Institute Research Challenge, a global competition that tests students’ analytic, valuation, report writing and presentation skills. The CFA societies will host challenges with nearby universities and select one winning team based on the students’ research report and presentation. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University political science professor to conduct Young Women’s Leadership Symposium

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University faculty member will lead the second annual Young Women’s Leadership Symposium later this month on campus.

Dr. Marsha Lyle-Gonga, assistant professor of political science, will conduct the symposium, which has an anticipated enrollment of 100 women, from 8:30am-4:30pm, March 30th in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. The one-day seminar is designed to increase the political efficacy of women ages 18-24 through leadership development and civic engagement activities. [Read more]

Tennessee artist Olen Bryant to be honored at Sunday’s Austin Peay State University’s Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts’ annual CECA Ovation Awards

APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative ArtsClarksville, TN – For decades, artist and Austin Peay State University emeritus professor Olen Bryant has inspired students and community members through his patient demeanor and innovative sculptural works. His reputation as an artist was solidified locally in the early 1980s when his piece, “The Sentinel,” was unveiled as a permanent, public art installation in the center of the APSU campus.

But at 2:00pm on March 4th, the University will again recognize him when he is named the recipient of this year’s George Mabry Award, presented during the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts’ annual Ovation Awards Ceremony at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center auditorium. Austin Peay State University’s online gallery launches new “From Here” exhibit

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s online art gallery, www.terminalapsu.org, is pleased to announce the launch of the 2011-12 Terminal Award-winning “From Here,” an art project by Joel Swanson and Ben Jacobson. Terminal gives out four awards yearly to artists or artist teams to help in the completion of Internet-based art works.

“From Here” is a networked art project that explores the inherit ambiguity of language, in particular adjectival nouns of place. [Read more]

New Starbucks opens inside Austin Peay State University Woodward Library

He shuffles over to the Woodward Library, instead of the Einstein’s Bros. Bagel shop in the Morgan University Center, yawns and then gets to work studying.
