Austin Peay State University Nursing School repeats success of 100% pass rate on NCLEX licensure test

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For the third time in the last three years, the Austin Peay State University School of Nursing recorded a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX licensure testing last winter, surpassing the national average pass rate of 91 percent.

A total of 39 graduates from the Class of 2011 in December took the NCLEX for the first time and passed. The national average of 91 percent represents those who took the test January-March 2012. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University honors exemplary professors during Annual Honors and Awards Ceremony

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – On Tuesday afternoon, Austin Peay State University recognized five professors with the highest distinctions awarded to faculty members during the University’s annual Honors and Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Mary Lou Witherspoon, professor of mathematics, was named the recipient of the 2012 APSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award. The award is presented annually to a faculty member or department chairperson who has completed a minimum of four years of full-time teaching at Austin Peay. [Read more]

Kathryn L. Mattingly was named the recipient of the William McClure Drane Award, and Kaci Robertson received the Harvill-Civitan Citizenship Award. [Read more]

Philip Voorhees became president of the Tennessee Association on Higher Education and Disability during the organization’s annual conference on April 13th.

Lynette Taylor, Martin Golson and Philip Voorhees recently were awarded a TBR Diversity Access Grant for serving at-risk students. [Read more]

Most probably the student wouldn’t be able to tell you that Warren was a graduate of Clarksville High School in 1921 or that he was born in Guthrie, Kentucky.

Even fewer would know that he is uniquely the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, one for fiction and two for poetry; no other Pulitzer Prize winner can claim this accolade. [Read more]

APSU to graduate record 1,000-plus students May 4th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will award degrees to 1,075 students – the largest class in APSU history – during its 83rd Spring Commencement on Friday, May 4th in the Dunn Center.

More students are graduating from APSU because of the University’s increased efforts to offer students more opportunities to finish their degrees faster. One of those opportunities is APSU’s new Winter Term, which launched in December 2011. Some of the students will be able to graduate May 4th because they took a course during Winter Term. The ceremony will be at 11:30am, Tuesday, May 1st in the Morgan University Center Ballroom. Tickets are $25.00 per person.

Featured speaker will be Janet Ayers, president of the Ayers Foundation and the 2007 Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropist of the Year, who in 2006 gave more than $3.4 million to support community organizations in Tennessee and in the previous three years had personally given or pledged more than $27 million. The students who make up the APSU Wind Ensemble know this about their professor and conductor, so they were a bit confused when he handed out the sheet music for their next performance. The words “Star Wars” were printed at the top of the page. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – When Austin Peay State University student Jorge Jiménez Cano first arrived in the United States, he only spoke a handful of basic English words, such as “hello” and “yes.” This proved to be a bit problematic on the days when he wasn’t feeling well.

“When I’d go to the doctor, I’d say ‘ouch here,’” he recalled, pointing to his throat to show the doctor where he felt pain. “It was intimidating.” [Read more]

APSU Military Center coordinator receives Patriot Award

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – When Darlene Howell, coordinator of the Austin Peay State University Military Student Center, was called out of her office on Wednesday afternoon, she was a bit confused. Why were there so many people – including APSU President Tim Hall – gathered in the Center, watching her every move?

But then Bob Beaty, a volunteer with the Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), stepped forward to clear things up by presenting Howell with an award.
