APSU Music Education Students attend state conference

Clarksville, TN – “Think Music. Think Austin Peay.” That’s the motto of the Austin Peay State University Department of Music, and earlier this year, Dr. Eric Branscome, coordinator of music education at APSU, decided to remind his students what exactly those five words meant.
“For the longest time, we have not had students in music education participate in many of the local or state-wide music education events,” he said. “My soapbox to the students has been, it’s hard to ‘think music, think Austin Peay’ when Austin Peay is not involved in the music education community.”
Gateway Chamber Orchestra showcases string section with October 27th concert

Clarksville, TN – Are you familiar with Clarksville’s Gateway Chamber Orchestra? For the last five years, the ensemble – made up of Austin Peay State University music faculty and other professional musicians – has hosted acclaimed performances of classical masterworks and garnered serious Grammy consideration with their two recorded albums.
Still, the orchestra sometimes feels like a well-kept secret. That’s why they’ve kicked off the “Get to know the GCO” campaign this year, with the intention of showcasing the different components of this incredibly talented ensemble.
APSU’s Acuff Circle of Excellence seeking 2014 Ovation Award nominations

Clarksville, TN – The Acuff Circle of Excellence, a nonprofit patron society of the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, is seeking nominations for the coveted Ovation Awards, presented annually since 1996.
The nominees must have made significant contributions to the artistic and cultural life of the Clarksville-Montgomery County community. Anyone can submit nominations.
While the Ovation Awards will be presented at a celebration on March 2nd, 2014, at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center, nominations are being sought now through Friday, January 17th, 2014. [Read more]
Austin Peay State University’s popular Halloween concert returns for 29th year on October 29th

Clarksville, TN – At 6:00pm and 8:00pm on October 29th, the Austin Peay State University Department of Music will host a light-hearted, family-friendly concert about death.
“But we’re going to try and make death as fun as we can possibly make it,” David Steinquest, APSU professor of music, said.
This might sound a bit odd to those unfamiliar with the annual APSU Halloween Percussion Concert, but fans of the event know the theme will fit in nicely with the strange blend of music and mayhem that has come to define the wildly popular community event for the last 29 years.
Clarksville-Montgomery County Veterans Day Parade to be held November 9th

Montgomery County, TN – The Clarksville-Montgomery County Veterans Day Parade will take place on Saturday, November 9th, with pre-parade ceremonies set for 9:00am in front of the historic courthouse (south side) on Third Street in Downtown Clarksville.
Keynote speaker is Mary Ross, national commander of Women Veterans of America, with remarks by Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan.
Famed Marine Corps General to speak at APSU Military Alumni Dinner on October 25th

Clarksville, TN – In July 1977, a young Austin Peay State University graduate named Ronald Bailey was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Thirty-four years later, in June 2011, that APSU graduate became the first African American commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, the oldest and largest infantry division in the Marine Corps.

Clarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Hospital.
This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall. The meeting begins at 7:00pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.

APSU choral program continues busy season with October 22nd Concert

Clarksville, TN – This fall is shaping up to be a busy semester for Austin Peay State University Choral Activities. In early September, the University’s three choral groups – Vocal Ease, University Choir and Chamber Singers – performed for the Tennessee Board of Regents dinner at APSU.
A few weeks later, the Chamber Singers traveled to Nashville for a performance at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center as part of the Nashville Symphony’s Free Day of Music event.

APSU Master Plan wins outstanding design award

Clarksville, TN – Earlier this year, Austin Peay State University unveiled its 2013 Master Plan, which projects how the campus is expected to grow and develop over the next 15 years.
That growth will likely change the look of APSU, with new buildings and green spaces taking shape in the coming years, but members of the University community need not worry. [Read more]
