APSU Freshman to Live in Hall Named After Great-grandfather
August 3, 2010
When Ben Rawlins decided to attend Austin Peay State University, he went online to look at the different housing options for incoming freshmen. His father sat next to him as he scrolled through the names of the residence halls, and both men stopped when one name appeared on the screen – Rawlins Hall.
“My dad was the one who really wanted me to stay in that dorm,” Ben said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
The residence hall’s name isn’t simply a coincidence. The dorm is named for Ben Rawlins’ great-grandfather, Dr. George Rawlins Jr., who taught at APSU from 1946 to 1964 and served as chair of the chemistry department.

APSU’s ESL Institute announces semester registration
July 29, 2010
Language should not be a barrier for those needing to communicate in English as a second language.
Those needing to improve their English language skills are encouraged to register for the Fall 2010 semester at the English as Second Language (ESL) Institute at Austin Peay State University. Registration for the fall semester is from August 9th–25th.
The ESL (ESL) Institute at APSU offers a diversified and intensive program of study in English designed for international students seeking undergraduate admission to APSU or another university. In addition, students from the Clarksville area community who wish to improve their English language skills in order to improve their workplace skills or further their professional careers regularly participate in the program. The ESL program’s intensive English courses are offered through the Center for Extended and Distance Education and are not taken for credit.
Class size is small in order to provide students with more personalized attention and opportunities to improve their learning skills. ESL Institute instructors have taught English in the U.S. and abroad, and all have strong backgrounds in education and extensive experience in teaching English to non-English speakers. Students also have access to University computer labs as well as state-of-the-art SmartBoard technology used by trained instructors in the classroom.

July 26, 2010
Classical music aficionados were surprised last month when they picked up the latest issue of Fanfare Magazine and read that a chamber ensemble out of Clarksville had recorded the definitive version of Mozart’s “Wind Serenade in B flat” and Richard Strauss’s “Wind Serenade in E flat.” Music critic Jerry Dubins even said the recordings by this previously unknown group ranked above the performances by prominent ensembles from New York, London and around the world.
The Gateway Chamber Ensemble, which consists of Austin Peay State University faculty members and professional musicians from around the region, released its first CD, “Wind Serenades,” in March, and critics with Fanfare Magazine, one of the genre’s pre-eminent publications, immediately took note of the recording’s high quality.
