PKP at APSU needs used, new children’s books to give as Halloween treats

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For the eighth consecutive Halloween, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) at Austin Peay State University is collecting new and gently used children’s books for its Candy for the Mind project.

Through this project, PKP distributed more than 1,500 books to community children during last year’s G.H.O.S.T. (Great Halloween Options for Safe Trick-or-Treating), the on-campus alternative for safe trick-or-treating. Currently, PKP has some books on hand for distribution during G.H.O.S.T., slated this year from 4:00pm-7:00pm, Sunday, October 31st but needs many more. Since the inception of the Candy for the Mind project in 2003, hundreds of children who trick-or-treat at APSU have been thrilled to receive a book as a Halloween treat. [Read more]

Provost Lecture Series at APSU continues with talk about Cotton Mather’s ‘American Bible’

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University will feature a presentation next week about the writings of a 17th century Puritan minister who left behind his thoughts, opinions and interpretations of the Bible.

Dr. Clark Maddux, assistant professor of languages and literature, will present “Cotton Mather’s American Bible” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, October 7th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

Before joining APSU, Maddux was assistant professor and coordinator of English graduate studies at Tennessee State University in Nashville. He has authored a number of journal articles, including “God’s Responsibility: Narrative Choice and Providential History in Mather’s ‘Biblia Americana’ Commentary on Ezra,” published in 2007 in Early American Literature. APSU’s 2010 Homecoming features two sports events open to public

Austin Peay State University AlumniClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University National Alumni Association will sponsor a couple of sports events during Homecoming 2010 that will be open to the public.

The 32nd Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament will be at 8:00am, Friday, October 8th at Swan Lake Golf Course. Cost is $60.00 per person, and advance registration is required. Fee includes ditty bag, refreshments on the golf course and light lunch. The event, sponsored by Budweiser of Clarksville, is co-chaired by alumni Nelson Boehms (’86) and Frazier Allen (’99). Austin Peay Downtown Gallery Hosts New Ceramics Exhibit

Austin Peay Downtown Art GalleryClarksville, TN – Artist Lauren Martin has a strong, visceral reaction every time her fingers touch the cold, damp clay on her potter’s wheel.

“I often feel that as I lose myself to the magic of throwing, my mind and artistic freedom grows and turns in sync with the mesmerizing force that urges the clay into its shape,” she said recently.

This October, a new exhibition at the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery will display several works created through this intuitive connection between flesh and mud. The show, “The Vessel,” will feature pieces by Martin, Ken Shipley, Katt Morgan and Caroline Tuzenue. It opens October 7th with a reception from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and runs through October 30th. Former APSU president writes book with retired APSU PR director

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Months prior to the death of her husband, former Austin Peay State University President Dr. Sherry Hoppe began writing the untold story of Bob Hoppe, the Auburn football star charged with first-degree murder in 1988 – 31 years after the crime had happened.

After her husband died in 2008, Hoppe recruited another former APSU administrator to co-author the book. Dennie Burke, the longtime executive director of the APSU Public Relations and Marketing Office, served seven years under Hoppe’s tenure at APSU and agreed to collaborate with her on the book project. APSU will be host to elementary, middle school teachers at STEM conference

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Elementary and middle school teachers will participate in a conference that will focus on strategies for integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) principles into instruction in grades K-8.

The conference will be held Saturday, October 2nd in the Claxton Building at Austin Peay State University.

Keynote speaker will be Michael Wilson, manager of the APSU Geographical Information Systems (GIS). His talk will focus on ways K-8 students can display experimental or research data. [Read more]

Famed teacher who helped students to form Freedom Writers to speak September 30th at APSU

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In the fall of 1994, an idealistic first-year teacher at Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA, began her career in a classroom of at-risk students – many of whom were victims of racial intolerance and simply accepted it as part of their lives.

When the teacher, Erin Gruwell, grabbed hold of a note being passed that showed an ugly racial caricature, the moment was the catalyst Gruwell needed to usher her students into an eye-opening journey against intolerance. [Read more]
