New APSU Exhibit Showcases Work of Late Local Artists Tom Malone

April 9, 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Some 13 years after his untimely death, the artist and musician Tom Malone is still fondly remembered in the Clarksville community. People often speak reverently of the former Austin Peay State University art student’s prolific and inspired output of work, ranging from painting to drawing to sculpture to jewelry to designing musical instruments and handcrafted furniture.

“To me, he glowed with creativity and I could sense that he had a better existence than me because he was able to let go of what was expected of him, exist through a job as a job and live life as an artist,” local musician Syd Hedrick wrote in an essay on Malone in 1999. [Read more]

APSU Remembers Legacy and Friendship of Late Composer Lee Hoiby

April 6, 2011

Clarksville, TN – In his later years, the renowned American composer Lee Hoiby was a quiet, slender gentleman with wavy gray hair and intelligent, often amused eyes. His appearance suited his style of music, which was reminiscent of the pleasing tunes of the early Romantic era and of his idol, Franz Schubert.

“His music is beautiful,” Gregory Wolynec, Austin Peay State University associate professor of music, said. “When we think of contemporary music, we frequently think of things that can be difficult for audiences to approach. But Lee Hoiby considered himself the caretaker of an heirloomed garden that started back with Mozart and Haydn, and even earlier than that.”

They add another layer to it’s meaning. Thirty Years of Work Produces New Story Collection for APSU’s Kitterman

April 3, 2011

Clarksville, TN – Barry Kitterman, an Austin Peay State University creative writing professor, is from the San Joaquin – a large valley in California where much of the country’s fruits and vegetables are grown. Specifically, he’s from the small town of Ivanhoe, where the air doesn’t smell of sea salt and beach bums aren’t camped out under the redwoods or on the rabbit farms.

“When I would tell people I was from California, they had a certain set of assumptions as to what that meant,” Kitterman said. “It was so far removed from my real experience that I thought I wanted to write stories about the California I grew up in, which is rural, agricultural, a long way from the ocean and, something I realized much later, very poor.”
