APSU Art Student Renyi Zhang Presents “Reinterpretations of Still-Life” Exhibit

Clarksville, TN – Studio art major and first place winner of this year’s Austin Peay State University Annual Student Art Show, Renyi Zhang (also known as Isabel Forest), is going to present her work in a new exhibit, “Reinterpretations of Still-Life,” which opens with a reception from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on April 25th, in the Trahern Student Gallery.

Governors Bass Tournament just weeks away

Clarksville, TN – The 17th annual Austin Peay State University Governors Bass Tournament is just one month away.

This year’s edition will be held Saturday, May 14th, at Kentucky Lake, with registration and boat launching from Paris Landing, Tennessee, State Park. Last season’s tourney was postponed from May 8th to May 23rd, due to flood conditions that encased the area. Despite the two-week delay, the tourney still drew 269 boats.

This year, APSU again is hopeful of approaching the 300-boat total—the record of 333 was set in 2009.

APSU Professor Yu Earns Best Paper at ACM Conference

Clarksville, TN – Over the last several years, Dr. Yingbing Yu, assistant professor of computer science at Austin Peay State University, has developed an interest in the biomedical science of immunology. Specifically, he’s been curious about how natural immune systems identify and protect an organism from harmful foreign bodies, such as bacteria or parasites. Faculty, staff at APSU present at conferences, appear in publications

Clarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff employees at Austin Peay State University recently presented at conferences, had articles published or represented the University in some way.

Dr. Kristofer Ray, assistant professor of history, spoke at the Civil War Sesquicentennial Program of the Metropolitan Historical Commission on April 9th in Nashville. He explained how the leaders in both the North and South reinterpreted the precepts of America’s founding fathers to suit their own political, social and economic purposes. APSU’s GIS Center and Oak Ridge Receive $400,000 Grant for Cell Phone App Program

Clarksville, TN – On a stormy Monday afternoon, while tornado sirens blared across the Austin Peay State University campus, Mike Wilson, manager of the school’s Geographic Information Systems Center, decided to talk about natural disasters.

“Suppose a tornado rips through here,” he said, knocking on his wood desk to ward off the suggestion. “If that happens, local officials will need to do a preliminary damage assessment. That’ll go to the state, and the governor will make a decision on whether to call in FEMA for a natural disaster. This app speeds that up.”

Wilson motioned to his Android mobile phone. A year ago, his office, in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, developed an innovative new cell phone application known as the Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK). The application allows emergency responders to document immediately any damage they come across following a disaster. [Read more]

APSU develops course suggestion tool similar to Netflix, Amazon

Clarksville, TN – If you’ve been online lately, then perhaps you have bought a book recommended to you by Amazon, watched a movie that Netflix suggested that you would enjoy or listened to music selected for you by Pandora.

APSU Phi Alpha Theta Students Do Well at Regional History Conference

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Minoa Uffelman, assistant professor of history at Austin Peay State University, tried not to smile last week when asked if her students would put on a strong showing at the annual Phi Alpha Theta History Conference at Murray State University that weekend.

“Hopefully we’ll win something,” she said.

That was her way of being humble. The University’s PAT chapter, which Uffelman advises, was twice named as the “Best Chapter” in the country. The organization attracts some of the campus’ brightest history students, so it came as no surprise last weekend when two of its members took home the conference’s top awards.

APSU Choir and Chamber Singers Examine “The Seasons” During April 25th Concert

Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Choir and the APSU Chamber Singers are distilling an entire year into its most basic, visceral elements later this month with their final concert of the semester, “The Seasons.”

The performance, which begins at 7:30pm on April 25th in the APSU Music/Mass Communication Building, will feature noted composers’ musical interpretations of the four different seasons, with works being sung in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish and German. [Read more]
