APSU Foundation selects new members to serve for 2011

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Foundation has selected 10 new members for 2011.

The APSU Foundation provides the structure through which the University can work directly with special volunteers and community leaders to enhance the financial well being of the University. The Foundation’s purpose is to financially support the University.

The Foundation is a separate entity and is chartered by the state, with the authority to receive private gifts in support of the University. Through its executive committee, the Foundation makes its own policy decisions. The University provides administrative support to the Foundation. [Read more]

Eight APSU Physics Students to Participate in Coveted Summer Research Programs

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – This summer, eight Austin Peay State University physics students will spread out across the country to take part in the prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at some of the nation’s top universities.

The REU program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, provides grant money for undergraduate students to participate in innovative new research. Thousands of college students apply each year in different disciplines, with only a select few receiving the coveted REU Awards. [Read more]

Northeast Middle School Students Win State Competition with Help from APSU

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville is a large venue, with two levels of seating and a capacity for more than 1,600 people. When three Northeast Middle School students first entered the building last month, their eyes widened. One of them might have gasped.

That’s where they were supposed to perform the short play they wrote? With all those seats?

“We didn’t think we would do well at all,” Ariana Nelson, 14, said.

“We said, ‘our play is so lame,’” Brianna Tyre, 14, said.

Dr. Najmul Abedin, professor of public management, was designated Highly Commended Award Winner by the Emerald Group Publishing Limited in England for his article, titled “The ombudsman in developing democracies: The commonwealth Caribbean experience” published in the 2010 edition of International Journal of Public Sector Management. APSU awards coveted Distinguished Professor honor to Bert Randall at annual Honors and Awards Day ceremony

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – During Austin Peay State University’s Honors and Awards Ceremony on April 26th, Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy, received the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association’s Distinguished Professor Award.

Randall holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the university of Oklahoma. He has a B.S. in mathematics from Maryville College, a Master of Divinity in theology from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts. [Read more]

Markov named 2011 Hawkins Award Winner at APSU

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dr. Sergei Markov, associate professor of biology, was named the recipient of Austin Peay State University’s prestigious Richard M. Hawkins Award during a ceremony on April 26th. The award is presented every spring in recognition of exceptional scholarly and creative work produced by a faculty member.

Markov has earned an international reputation in recent years for his groundbreaking biofuel research. Aside from being published in more than 70 research publications, he has been profiled by media outlets across the globe, and just last month, the industry trade publication Biodiesel Magazine wrote a feature on the work he is doing at Austin Peay. Michelle Rogers, biology instructor, Christina Chester-Fangman, assistant professor of library administration, Dr. Benita Bruster, assistant professor of teaching and learning, Dr. David Nelson, assistant professor of history, and Dr.Mercy Cannon, assistant professor of English, were named this year’s Socrates Award winners, an honor bestowed by APSU annually to teachers who have excelled in motivating and inspiring their students. 17th annual Governors Bass Tournament is just two weeks away

APSU Governors Bass TournamentClarksville, TN – The 17th annual Austin Peay State University Governors Bass Tournament is just two weeks away.

This year’s version will be held Saturday, May 14th, at Kentucky Lake, with registration and boat launching from Paris Landing, Tennessee, State Park. Last season’s tourney was postponed from May 8th to May 23rd, due to flood conditions that surrounded the area. Despite the two-week delay, the tourney still drew 269 boats.

Despite recent heavy rains, this year’s tourney looks promising. APSU again is hopeful of approaching the 300-boat total—the record of 333 was set in 2009.

APSU awards 2 top student honors at annual Honors and Awards Day ceremony

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A mathematics and physics major who will pursue her doctoral degree at Stanford University on a full scholarship and a history student who has become a mentor for transfer and nontraditional students received the two top student awards during Austin Peay State University’s annual Academic Honors and Awards Day ceremony.

Casey McKnight was named the recipient of the William McClure Drane Award, and Deanna B. Carter received the Harvill-Civitan Citizenship Award. [Read more]

CSA Hosts End-of-Semester Performances and Exhibits

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A full semester of public art and music lessons is coming to a close at Austin Peay State University with a series of exhibits and concerts hosted by The Community School of the Arts at APSU.

For the last two decades, area adults and children have honed their creative talents and discovered new passions through the CSA. The program serves approximately 350 students of all ages and skill levels through programs in music, dance and the visual arts. The CSA was founded in 1990 with the goal of promoting and increasing awareness of the arts throughout the surrounding area. [Read more]
