APSU certified as StormReady by National Weather Service

Clarksville, TN – In the last several weeks, Montgomery County has been under many flood, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings – and Austin Peay State University’s emergency team has reacted quickly to alert the campus community.
For instance, whenever tornado warnings are received, APSU sends text and email messages to students, faculty and staff, and the outdoor public address system brings weather warnings to attention.
Because of APSU’s efforts to keep the campus informed of weather situations, the National Weather Service has certified APSU as a StormReady community. [Read more]
Advising schedule planned for APSU’s Master of Arts in Teaching program at Fort Campbell campus

Clarksville, TN – Faculty, staff and students at Austin Peay State University recently achieved various accomplishments for various professional and scholarly work.
Mike Wilson, director of the GIS Center at APSU, and Doug Catellier, GIS analyst, showcased the center’s Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Expo in Washington, D.C. They also met with various congressional aides as well as officials from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to discuss their project. [Read more]
APSU Nursing School repeats success of 100 percent pass rate on National Licensing Test

Clarksville, TN – For the second time in the last two years, the Austin Peay State University School of Nursing recorded a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX licensure testing last winter, surpassing the national average pass rate of 89 percent.
The feat was accomplished for the first time in the program’s history in 2009. Then in 2010, a total 41 students who graduated in December 2010 with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree took the NCLEX for the first time and passed.
In addition to the B.S.N., the APSU School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing.

APSU’s Scanlan Named Section Editor for Scholarly MT Journal

Clarksville, TN – Dr. Perry Scanlan, director of Austin Peay State University’s medical technology program, occasionally gets phone calls from potential students, asking him where in Texas the University is located.
“That makes me chuckle,” he said. “Because of our name, they always think we’re from Austin, Texas.”
This confusion will likely end in the next few months now that APSU’s MT program is getting a little more national recognition. Earlier this year, Scanlan was named clinical practice editor for the Journal of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science, meaning both his name and the University’s name will appear prominently on the first page, under the masthead, of the nationally renowned publication.

Maynard Presented with 2011 Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy

Clarksville, TN – The Tennessee Board of Regents recognized the generosity of local businessman James Maynard on April 26th by presenting him with the 2011 Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy.
Maynard, a 1956 graduate of Austin Peay State University, has long been a supporter of the University. Most recently, he created the Maynard Family Endowment Scholarship, which provides financial assistance annually to a student from Montgomery County pursing a business degree at APSU.

Student Created Public Art Piece Now on Display at APSU

Clarksville, TN – On that first day, the reactions ranged from laughter to gasps of horror.
“A friend of mine heard screaming when people saw it,” Tobey Lee, an Austin Peay State University art student, said. “It scared them.”
That’s no surprise considering it was a death-defying scene they were witnessing. A painter, dressed in white coveralls, balanced on his toes some 15 feet in the air, to paint a red circle inside the APSU Morgan University Center.

Kimbrough Honored for His Support of APSU Academics

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University recently established a new honor, the Outstanding Academic Supporter Award, to recognize individuals who have made an exceptional effort to promote and support the educational components of the University.
On April 26th, during the annual Scholarship Donor Appreciation Dinner, Clarksville businessman and philanthropist Ben Kimbrough was named the inaugural recipient of the award.

APSU History Honor Students Create New Scholarly Journal

Clarksville, TN – Jennifer Montgomery didn’t get much sleep this past semester. Aside from the normal stresses of a graduating college senior, the Austin Peay State University history student was plagued with images of misspelled words and incorrectly used commas during many sleepless nights. When she thought about scholarly citations and the proper use of the Chicago Manual of Style, she nearly went into a panic.
That’s because Montgomery, a member of the University’s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society, took on an enormous responsibility during her final semester at APSU. She was appointed to serve as the editor-in-chief of the first scholarly history journal in Austin Peay’s history.
