Celebrate the Holiday at Austin Peay State University with annual Vienna in Clarksville Concert December 11th

APSU Department of MusicClarksville, TN – For more than 100 years, the Vienna Philharmonic has set aside New Year’s Day as a time to perform uplifting holiday pieces by Johann Strauss and his family. It has become one of the great traditions in all of music, earning a sizable television audience in America in recent years, but a new, similar tradition has taken hold in Clarksville.

For the last two years, Dr. Gregory Wolynec, associate professor of music at Austin Peay State University, has brought the festivities to town a little earlier with the APSU Symphony Orchestra’s annual “Vienna in Clarksville: A Holiday Celebration” concert. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members as well as some students at Austin Peay State University have been recognized for their recent professional and scholarly activities.

Dr. Doris Davenport, professor of nursing, was nominated for the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award.

Dr. Sara Gotcher, associate professor of theatre and dance, helped to write and direct “Who’s Coming to Dinner?” for the Montgomery County Historical Society in October. On a separate note, she played the role of “Ophelia Owl” in the Clarksville Children’s Theatre production of “Animal Tales: Pumpkin vs. Pie” in October at Dunbar Cave State Park. [Read more]

They include a ship tossing in the waves of a storm, a close-up shot of a stuffed animal’s eyes and a music video for the rock band Heart’s 1986 hit “These Dreams.”

But these aren’t simply arbitrary videos compiled from the Internet. The media artist xtine burrough found the clips by typing keywords from Walt Whitman’s 1865 poem commemorating the death of President Abraham Lincoln, “O Captain, My Captain,” into the website YouTube.

Austin Peay State University 2011 Distinguished Professor Award recipient to address 700-plus degree candidates

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will send off 733 candidates for degrees during dual Fall Commencement ceremonies December 16th in the Dunn Center.

Dr. Bert Randall, professor of philosophy and the 2011 APSU National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award recipient, will be the keynote speaker at both commencement events.

The faculty member who earns the Distinguished Professor Award in May serves as commencement speaker at APSU’s fall graduation.

Randall holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the university of Oklahoma. He has a B.S. in mathematics from Maryville College, a Master of Divinity in theology from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts. [Read more]

The ceremony will begin at 6:00pm in the Clement Auditorium on APSU’s main campus. A reception for the graduates and their families will immediately follow the program in the African American Cultural Center located in Clement, Room 120. [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay community flexed its muscles, Sunday, when more than 80 volunteers gathered to supply holiday groceries to the Lincoln Homes Community – a section of low-income housing adjacent to Austin Peay’s main campus – as part of the Govs Give Back.

The second-year project, spearheaded by the Austin Peay Fellowship of Christian Athletes, included volunteers from many Governors and Lady Govs sports teams through the Student Athlete Advisory Council, as well as the Baptist Student Ministry, the Church of Christ Student Ministry, UCHURCH and AQUA.
