Austin Peay State University announces winners of 25th annual Young Composer’s Competition

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts recently announced the winners of its 25th Annual Young Composer’s Competition.

First prize was awarded to Ethan Greene, of Austin, Texas, for his “Dancing as may be Credible” for clarinet, cello and piano. Tonia Ko, of Bloomington, IN, earned second prize for her “Wanderer Moon” for voice and chamber ensemble, and Pierce Gradone, also of Austin, Texas, took home third-prize honors for his “Hearing Voices” for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Austin Peay State University students earn top awards at Tennessee Academy of Science Conference

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Last October, a group of Austin Peay State University mathematics and computer science students headed south to Jackson, TN, to attend the 121st annual meeting of the Tennessee Academy of Science. The event, hosted by Union University, brought together some 200 researchers and college students from across the state for two intense days of academic presentations.

Everyone seemed to have a good time, but earlier this month, several of those students learned that the conference was more fruitful than they realized. That’s because the awards for presentations were recently announced, with first-, second- and third-place prizes all going to APSU students. [Read more]

Dr. Harvey F. Blanck, emeritus professor of chemistry, had an article, titled “Using Plastic Models Designed to Produce Large Height to Length Ratio Steady State Planar and Axisymmetric (Radial) Viscous Liquid Laminar Flow Gravity Currents,” published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Chemical Education. Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University music professor’s expertise in the music of the guzheng instrument, which has seen a revitalization, based on her recent first-hand experience in China will be the next session of the Provost Lecture Series program.

Dr. Ann Silverberg, professor of music, will present “The Chinese Guzheng: Old and New” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, January 19th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public. [Read more]

Austin Peay State University’s Yearbook earns First Place Award

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s yearbook, The Monocle, was named a first-place winner in the American Scholastic Press Association’s 2011 Scholastic Review and Contest.

The 2010 edition of the yearbook was given the top distinction along with similar yearbooks from Clemson University, Michigan State University, Howard University and others.

Judges award points based on design, photography, writing and other criteria. First-, second- and third-place awards are given based on the total points awarded. [Read more]

These strange recollections, arising from the millions of images we are exposed to on the Internet and television, fascinate the California-based artist McLean Fahnestock, and her new exhibit, “Republic of Champions,” examines the public’s collective memory, created by our constant exposure to images in the media.

Austin Peay State University to break ground on new Math and Computer Science Facility in Fall 2012

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has announced it will break ground on a new mathematics and computer science building in Fall 2012 on the main campus.

The new $6.7 million facility, designed by Rufus Johnson Associates in Clarksville, will be located on Eighth Street, directly behind the Hemlock Semiconductor Building. The two-story building is projected to open in the spring of 2014.

Dr. Tristan Denley, provost and vice president of academic affairs, was interviewed for a story in the December 11th, 2011, issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education about how educational data mining to customize student experiences and selections. The raffle drawing will be held during the men’s basketball game between APSU and Southeast Missouri on Saturday, February 25th, 2012, in the Dunn Center. It is not necessary to be present to win. [Read more]
