Gateway Chamber Orchestra earning high marks for second album

Gateway Chamber OrchestraClarksville, TN – Last spring, Clarksville’s Gateway Chamber Orchestra quietly released its second album, “Chamber Symphonies,” featuring works by Romanian composer George Enescu and Austrian composers Franz Schreker and Arnold Schoenberg.

The group, made up of Austin Peay State University music faculty and other professional musicians, then took some time off for the summer break. When they returned to Clarksville last fall, the orchestra quickly set to work on one of its most ambitious seasons yet.

Austin Peay State University Chamber Singers to tour Nashville and East Tennessee in March

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – This March, Austin Peay State University’s premiere choral ensemble – the Chamber Singers – will showcase their talents in east Tennessee during their 2013 recruiting tour. The group will visit local high schools during the day, and they will perform free concerts each night for members of these local communities.

“We’re going to recruit Tennessee’s finest by showing them the excellent choral singing we have here at Austin Peay,” Dr. Korre Foster, director of choral activities at APSU, said. “Not only will we perform for them, but the high schoolers will get to interact with our students, asking them questions about Clarksville, our campus and college life.” [Read more]

APSU hosting regional Tennessee History Day competition February 25th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Last February, when Austin Peay State University first hosted a regional Tennessee History Day competition, organizers weren’t sure what to expect. Would local middle and high school students take the event seriously, crafting projects such posters, plays and documentaries on historical events?

“What came out amongst the judging core last year was that this was a whole lot more fun and a whole lot more interesting than they thought it would be,” Dr. Kristofer Ray, APSU associate professor of history and the event coordinator, said. “Most of the projects were very imaginative and thoughtful. The students clearly put a lot of time into them.” [Read more]

Austin Peay Downtown Gallery presents the exhibit “Collective II”

Austin Peay Downtown Art GalleryClarksville, TN – A new exhibit at the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery this month will highlight of the work of APSU alumnus Young Kim and APSU art instructor Becky Hall. The exhibit, “Collective II,” will open with a reception from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on February 7th, and it will run through March 2nd.

Kim, a native of South Korea, is an associate professor of art at Elon University in North Carolina. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kentucky and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from APSU. His work has been exhibited extensively at numerous galleries, including the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, the Hun Gallery in New York City and Causey Contemporary in Brooklyn.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presents Austin Peay State University Community School of the Arts with public service award

Collins Tuohy, portrayed in ‘The Blind Side,’ to speak at Austin Peay State University February 11th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Collins Tuohy, chronicled with her family in the 2010 blockbuster film “The Blind Side,” will wrap a whirlwind Super Bowl celebration week with an inspiring presentation Monday, February 11th at Austin Peay State University.

Tuohy, a Memphis, TN, native and adopted sister to Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Michael Oher, will speak beginning at 7:00pm in Clement Auditorium. Tuohy’s remarks have been titled “Behind ‘The Blind Side’: Overcoming Obstacles in the Face of Adversity.”

APSU gearing up for Dance Marathon to benefit Children’s Miracle Network

APSU’s Uffelman family attends president’s inauguration

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – They bundled up in winter hats, heavy coats, gloves and scarves. Dr. Minoa Uffelman, Austin Peay State University associate professor of history, bought $40.00 worth of “Hot Hands” hand warmers because she knew how cold it gets in Washington, D.C., in January.

Four years earlier, she tried to attend President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, but was among some 4,000-ticket holders unable to cross security barriers and reach the formal event.

Austin Peay Hall of Fame Breakfast tickets on sale through Tuesday

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Tickets for the 36TH Annual Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame Breakfast are on sale through Tuesday.

The breakfast, slated for 9:00am, Saturday, February 9th, will see Governors baseball coach Gary McClure, longtime team physician Dr. Cooper Beazley and former basketball star, Andrew Lorentzson, who was selected through the new Honors category, inducted, becoming the 101st, 102nd and 103rd members of APSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
