Gateway Chamber Orchestra brings powerful Mahler work to Middle Tennessee May 5th-6th

Gateway Chamber OrchestraClarksville, TN – In 1907, the great Austrian composer Gustav Mahler had a bad year. First, he lost his job as director of the Vienna State Opera. Then, in July, his young daughter Maria died after a brief illness. While grieving this loss, Mahler was diagnosed with a terminal heart condition.

In the months that followed, the composer found solace in a book of Chinese Tang Dynasty poetry titled “The Chinese Flute.” As he read the works, translated into German, a composition slowly took shape in his head.

Austin Peay State University Community School for the ArtsClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University Community School of the Arts is gearing up for a busy summer of creative arts classes and camps for children and adults in the Clarksville community.

For more than two decades, the CSA has provided top-notch music, art, drama, creative writing and dance lessons. This summer, the CSA will offer programs from June 3rd through August 2nd.

Rivers and Spires FestivalClarksville, TN – Sarah Gross has been named Miss River Queen 2013, while Hope Parker will reign as the new Miss River Teen.

The new title holders were crowned at the pageant held Saturday, April 13th at Austin Peay State University’s Clement Auditorium.

Queen City Road Race early bird registration deadline is April 19th

35th Annual Queen City Road RaceClarksville, TN – The 35th Annual Queen City Road Race will be Saturday, May 4th. Registration is going on now.

The Queen City Road Race event is a Clarksville tradition promoting fitness and fun for all ages. The 7K and 5K race route takes runners through the streets of Historic Downtown Clarksville, beginning and ending at Austin Peay State University’s Governors Stadium, while the One Mile Movement takes you on an exciting tour of a portion of the APSU campus.

For over thirty years, hundreds of Clarksville-Montgomery County and Fort Campbell school students, teachers and family members have participated in this Clarksville tradition.

15 APSU Faculty members chosen as Summer Research Fellows

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Fifteen faculty members at Austin Peay State University have been chosen as awardees in the Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP), an initiative to encourage the development of research/creative activity projects at the University.

The SRFP awards up to $5,000 for selected proposals by tenured or tenure-track faculty to develop a research or creative activity project that should place them in a better position to seek external funding.

Two APSU Students earn prestigious Goldwater Scholarships

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Administrators at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were probably pretty excited last month when they learned one of their students had earned a highly competitive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

To the south, officials at the University of Tennessee likely experienced a similar rush when they heard one of their students was also named a Goldwater Scholar.
